Highlight Romans Chapter 8:1-4 New Living Translation

    Life in the Spirit

8 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power[a] of the life-giving Spirit has freed you[b] from the power of sin that leads to death. 3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.[c] So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Explain - Paul explains that there is now no condemnation to those that belong to Christ Jesus.

Apply – Our enemy, the devil, will try to condemn us from our past sins.  He wants us focused on our past sin and remorse than to be focused on what the Holy Spirit wants us focused on.  Romans 8:1 clearly says that there is now no condemnation to those that belong to Jesus.  We must stand on His truth and not accept nor dwell on any negative thoughts but focus on the things of God. Our sins are forgiven, God has forgiven us – we MUST accept His forgiveness and NOT condemn ourselves.

Respond – Thank You Lord for Your Truth, Your Life.  I reject and resist any negative thoughts that may come but will strive to be focused on You and Your will for my life.  I look forward to the bountiful life ahead with and in You.

Highlight - Romans 7:4-6 New Living Translation

No Longer Bound to the Law

4 So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God. 5 When we were controlled by our old nature,[b] sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death. 6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.

Explain – Paul explains that a sinner’s old nature died with him when he came to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  The believer’s new nature is released from the law by living a Spirit controlled life to serve God with a faithful and obedient life.

Apply – We must come to Jesus completely, giving up our old sinful ways by living faithfully and obediently to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Respond- Lord, a reaffirm my life in You, I seek to abide in You faithfully and obediently, Holy Spirit, always.  Amen.

    Sin’s Power Is Broken

6 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Explain – Paul reminds believers that they have been set free of the bondage of sin. The old lives of believers was buried, believers should live new lives in Christ.

Apply – We too are new creation in Christ, the old has passed away, we are free of the bondage of sin as long as we resist any and all temptations to return to sin.  He is faithful to provide us a way out of every temptation, we must seek Him.

Respond – Lord thank You for setting me free from the bondage of sin.  Thank You, Holy Spirit, for always providing a way of escape from temptation and victory over my old sinful nature.  Amen.

Highlight – Romans 5:1-4 New Living Translation

    Faith Brings Joy

5 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace[a] with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Explain – Paul explains that believers have been made right in the sight of God by their faith which brings joy and peace.  Believers can rejoice when they experience problems and trials which will develop endurance, strength of character which strengthens their hope of salvation.  God truly loves His believers because He has given them the Holy Spirit to fill their hearts with love.

Apply – We must put our hope and trust in God so that we too wii be made right in the sight of God by our faith which brings joy and peace.  We too can rejoice when we experience problems and trials which will develop endurance, strength of character which strengthens our hope of salvation.  God truly loves us because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with love.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your provision, and help me to experience Your joy and peace as I grow in You through problems and trials that will develop my character in You.

    HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 4

Highlight - Romans 4:13-16 New Living Translation

13 Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith. 14 If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless. 15 For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!) 16 So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.

Explain – Paul explains that Abraham’s relationship with God was based on his faith in God, the promise is received as a free gift for those that would believe.

Apply – We must put our faith in God, and in doing so we must believe with our full mind, soul, and strength.  If we truly believe, we will think like we believe, we will talk like we believe, and we will act like we believe at all times.

Respond – Lord thank You for Your free gift of salvation and our relationship that keeps me with and in You always.

    HEAR Journaling Romans Chapter 3

Highlight - Romans 3 New Living Translation

23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

    …

31 Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.

Explain - Paul explains that everyone is a sinner, all fall short of God’s glorious standard, but anyone can be made right with God by believing on Jesus Christ, the sacrifice for all sin.  This means that people die to self when they accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and He enables them to live a clean and righteous life in Him.

Apply - We will be made right with God by believing on Jesus Christ, the sacrifice for all our sin.  When we die to ourselves by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He will empower us to live a clean and righteous life in Him for His glory.

Respond – Lord, thank You for saving me, I am blessed to be able to walk with You and in You every moment of my life.  Help Me Lord to make the right choices.  Amen

    God’s Judgment of Sin

2 You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. 2 And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. 3 Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? 4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?

5 But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 He will judge everyone according to what they have done. 7 He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. 8 But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. 9 There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.[a] 10 But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

Explain – Paul explains that God is wonderfully kind, tolerant and patient, but people need to make the choice to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior or face certain judgement.

Apply – The Lord has made a way out of the bondage of sin for all people.  Now is the time to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.  Now is also the time for us to actively, obediently, and faithfully, follow Him, as He has important things for us to do.  What an exciting time to be alive!

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your free gift of salvation, I thank You for my life, now free from the bondage of sin.  I pray that all will heed Your call on their lives, and resist the enemy who would try to defeat us.  Help me Lord to follow You forever actively, obediently, and faithfully. Amen.

Highlight – Romans Chapter 1:18-27 New Living Translation

18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.[i] 19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

    …

28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. 29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32 They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.

Explain – Paul explains the sinful ways of people who instead of turning to God, choose to resist Him, so God turns them over to their foolish thinking, their minds become dark and they suffer the consequences of their own choices.

Apply – The Lord has made a way out of the bondage of sin for all people.  Each person has a choice to make, repent and submit to God through Jesus Christ, or suffer the penalty of their choice.  There is no excuse for their choice of sin over Jesus because God has made it obvious to them.  People today make up their own idols of worship in this depraved culture and worship themselves over God.  What choice will you make?

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your free gift of salvation, I thank You for my life, now free from the bondage of sin.  I pray that all will heed Your call on their lives, and resist the enemy who would try to defeat us.  Amen.

Paul on the Island of Malta

28 Once we were safe on shore, we learned that we were on the island of Malta. 2 The people of the island were very kind to us. It was cold and rainy, so they built a fire on the shore to welcome us. 3 As Paul gathered an armful of sticks and was laying them on the fire, a poisonous snake, driven out by the heat, bit him on the hand. 4 The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said to each other, “A murderer, no doubt! Though he escaped the sea, justice will not permit him to live.” 5 But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed. 6 The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn’t harmed, they changed their minds and decided he was a god.

Explain – This very poisonous snake bit Paul, the islanders saw it happen and knew from past experience that Paul would soon die.  However, Paul lived with no ill effects astonishing the islanders.

Apply – God’s protection was with Paul as is His protection for us.  We must maintain our relationship with Him, obediently and faithfully following His wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction without fear or trepidation because He is with us always.

Respond – Lord, help me to effectively maintain my relationship with You, to obediently and faithfully follow Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction without fear or trepidation because You are always with me.
