HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 9

Highlight - 1 Corinthians 9 New Living Translation

19 Even though I am a frxee man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ.20 When I was with the Jews, I lived like a Jew to bring the Jews to Christ. When I was with those who follow the Jewish law, I too lived under that law. Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. 21 When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law,[e] I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ.

22 When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Corinth that he, in following the Holy Spirit, will adapt to the lives of those that he ministers to, to be able to win them to salvation in Christ.  He always obeys the law of Christ.

Apply – Holy Spirit may lead us to some different people, cultures, where we will need to adapt our lives for His better purpose.  Will we be as adaptable as that of Paul?  We should strive to follow the Holy Spirit at all times.

Respond - Holy Spirit, help me be ready when you call me, to adapt my life for Your better purpose.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 8

Highlight – 1 Corinthians Chapter 8 New Living Translation

9 But you must be careful so that your freedom does not cause others with a weaker conscience to stumble. 10 For if others see you—with your “superior knowledge”—eating in the temple of an idol, won’t they be encouraged to violate their conscience by eating food that has been offered to an idol? 11 So because of your superior knowledge, a weak believer[b] for whom Christ died will be destroyed. 12 And when you sin against other believers[c] by encouraging them to do something they believe is wrong, you are sinning against Christ. 13 So if what I eat causes another believer to sin, I will never eat meat again as long as I live—for I don’t want to cause another believer to stumble.

Explain – Paul cautions the believers in Corinth not to engage in things that may cause another believer to stumble.  He says that it is a sin against another believer to encourage them to do something they believe is wrong, also a sin against Christ.

Apply – We should be mindful of our surroundings and those that are watching.  We should follow the leading of the Holy Spirit so that we are not a stumbling block for other believers, but rather an example of living a Christ like life.

Respond – Lord, help me to be mindful of my surroundings and those that are watching.  Help me follow You, Holy Spirit, so that I am not a stumbling block for other believers, but rather living a Christ like life.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 7

Highlight - 1 Corinthians 7 New Living Translation

Instruction on Marriage

7 Now regarding the questions you asked in your letter. Yes, it is good to abstain from sexual relations.[a] 2 But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband. 3 The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. 4 The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Corinth about marriage and sexuality.  Clearly there is no place for sexual relations outside of marriage.  Husbands and wives are to be faithful to each other and not give Satan any place for temptation.

Apply – We live in a very sexualized society where depravity is idolized, the enemy has fooled and tempted many to habitually sin.  We must give no place for the devil or to yield to temptation that will only lead to sin which will spawn even more sin.  We must follow the leading of the Holy Spirit who will not lead us to sin.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your truth that truly has set me free.  Help me to remain faithful to You always.

HEAR Journaling Galatians Chapter 2 

Highlight – Galatians Chapter 2:15-16 New Living Translation

15 “You and I are Jews by birth, not ‘sinners’ like the Gentiles. 16 Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”[d]

Explain – Paul explains that people are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ, not by any effort to obey the law, rather believers need to obey the Holy Spirit.

Apply – We too are saved only though faith through Jesus Christ.  We must be faithfully obedient in our relationship with the Lord through the Holy Spirit.

Respond – Lord, thank You so much for Your free gift of salvation.  I seek to abide in You, Holy Spirit, as You abide in me.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently, to be all I can be in You, in Jesus name, Amen.

6 So we have urged Titus, who encouraged your giving in the first place, to return to you and encourage you to finish this ministry of giving. 7 Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us[c]—I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth encouraging them to be cheerful and obedient givers to support the ministry.

Apply – We too should be faithfully obedient to the urging of the Holy Spirit, when directed to give in service or resources we should cheerfully give.

Respond – Lord, thank You for your generous provision in my life.  I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently, in all of my ways, including giving as You so direct, with a cheerful heart.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 6

Highlight - 1 Corinthians 6 New Living Translation

9 Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality,10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Explain – Paul warns the believers in Corinth not to fool themselves, that God knows all we think, say, or do.  There is nothing that be hid from Him.  We were made holy by His grace and blood, we need to maintain holy lives in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Apply – We need to examine ourselves daily, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal aspects of our lives that need purging, through His power we can live holy lives.  If and when we fall, we should immediately repent and seek the Lord to restore us to righteousness in Him. 

Respond – Lord, I ask You to help me to examine myself daily with Your perspective.  Please, Holy Spirit, reveal any aspect of my life that need purging.  Provide knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and instruction to overcome my weaknesses, through Your power I can live holy a life.  If and when I fall, I will seek You immediately to repent and seek restoration as to righteousness in You.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 5

Highlight - 1 Corinthians 5 New Living Translation

9 When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. 10 But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. 11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer[j] yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. 12 It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. 13 God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.”[k]

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Corinth that habitual sin is not to be the life of a professing believer.  Believers are not to condone or support anyone that claims to be a believer but indulges in sin.

Apply – This particularly applies today as there as many so called “churches” that condone and encourage their congregants to live habitual sinful lives.  We know that God cannot bless anyone that is living in sin.

John 14 New Living Translation

21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

Respond – Lord thank You for Your Truth.  Help me live the life that You would have me live.  I pray for all believer that their eyes and hearts receive Your Truth.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 4

Highlight - 1 Corinthians 4 New Living Translation

4 So look at Apollos and me as mere servants of Christ who have been put in charge of explaining God’s mysteries. 2 Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful. 3 As for me, it matters very little how I might be evaluated by you or by any human authority. I don’t even trust my own judgment on this point. 4 My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide. 5 So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.

Explain – Paul explains that he only trusted in God’s judgement, not of others, or even his own opinion.  He cautions the believers in Corinth not to judge people before the Lord’s return, when all our darkest secrets will be revealed.  God will deal justly with each and every person. 

Apply – This brings to mind Proverbs 3:5-8 NLT:

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

7 Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
8 Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.

We are clearly in no position to judge, we are to trust God with all our hart, abide in Him as He abides in us.  He will not lead us to do evil, but in the way of the Lord.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction that I strive to follow in every thought, word, and deed.  Help me to resist the temptation to judgement, but to hasten my reliance on You.

HEAR Journaling - 1 Corinthians Chapter 3

Highlight - 1 Corinthians 3 New Living Translation

3 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people.[b] I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. 2 I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, 3 for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? 4 When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world?

Explain – Paul explains to the believers in Corinth that they are not ready for strong teaching because they still are controlled by their sinful natures.

Apply – We must submit to Christ fully and completely.  We cannot successfully live for the world and for Christ, but must be faithful and obedient followers to be all we can be in Him.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your provision of grace, love and peace in my life.  I seek to submit daily full and completely to be all I can be in You.

4 I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus.5 Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. 6 This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. 7 Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 9 God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Explain – Paul writes to the believers in the church in Corinth explaining that they have every spiritual gift they need as they serve the Lord until His return.  He promises that the Lord will keep them strong to the end, being free of all blame.

Apply – Those of us that have accepted Jesus as Savior, and faithfully and obediently abide in Him, will endure with Him until we see Him at our passing or His coming, either way it will be a glorious day.  We must endure to the end.

Matthew 24:13 ESV

But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Respond – Lord, thank You for saving me, I strive to abide in You to endure to the end in the joy and fulfillment that can only come in a life in You.
