HEAR Journaling - Exodus 20

Highlight – Exodus 20:18-21  New Living Translation

18 When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.

19 And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”

20 “Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”

21 As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was.

Explain – The people of Israel were afraid to face God or to hear God’s instructions.  Amazing that there was no doubt that this was God appearing to them, but they were afraid of Him.

Apply – Jesus came to us in the form of a man so that we could understand God’s love and His great mercy, grace, and forgiveness.  He came so that we would know Him as our Lord and Savior, who we can meet and commune with any time or place.  We need not fear Him as in terror or anxiety, but in a reverential fear in the awe and wonder of His personal relationship with each of us.

2 Timothy 1:7 ESV For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Psalm 34:4 ESV I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

1 John 4:18 ESV There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

1 Peter 3:18 ESV For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

Isaiah 53:5 ESV But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 19

Highlight – Exodus 19:16-20 New Living Translation

16 On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled. 17 Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply. 20 The Lord came down on the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses climbed the mountain.

Explain – The Lord instructed Moses to have the people prepare to meet and hear from Him.  After three days of preparation Mount Sinai was covered in smoke and fire.  The mountain shook violently with a blast of the ram’s horn.

Apply – God can appear to us in many ways.  Perhaps a soft quiet voice, through direct conversation mind to mind, perhaps audible voice, visions, dreams, through others etc.  We need to prepare ourselves so that we can receive and apply His Truth.

Romans 12:1-2 ESV I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

1 Peter 3:15 ESV But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

John 8:32 ESV And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Luke 21:36 ESV But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 18

Highlight – Exodus 18:17-24 New Living Translation

Jethro’s Wise Advice

17 “This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. 18 “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. 19 Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people’s representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. 20 Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. 21 But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten. 22 They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you. 23 If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.” 24 Moses listened to his father-in-law’s advice and followed his suggestions. 

Explain – Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law brought him some wise advice, to appoint leaders to settle common disputes.

Apply – God up to this point had given direction directly to Moses, but in this case Jethro provides some wise counsel.  The Lord will use others to provide wise counsel to us as well, but the enemy will provide some foolish advice as well.  The Lord will show us the right path of we will seek Him.

Psalm 1:1-3 ESV 1 Blessed is the man[a] who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law[b] of the Lord,    and on his law he meditates day and night.

Proverbs 12:15 ESV The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

James 3:17 ESV But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

Proverbs 11:14 ESV Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

Proverbs 15:22 ESV Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.

Proverbs 24:6 ESV For by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 17

Highlight – Exodus 17:1-7 New Living Translation

Water from the Rock

1At the Lord’s command, the whole community of Israel left the wilderness of Sin[a] and moved from place to place. Eventually they camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there for the people to drink. 2 So once more the people complained against Moses. “Give us water to drink!” they demanded. “Quiet!” Moses replied. “Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?” 3 But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”

4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What should I do with these people? They are ready to stone me!” 5 The Lord said to Moses, “Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you. 6 I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai.[b] Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on. 7 Moses named the place Massah (which means “test”) and Meribah (which means “arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?”

Explain – The whole community of Israel was complaining about Moses again.  He cried out to the Lord for instruction and the Lord told Moses to slap a particular rock and water would gush forth.  Moses obeyed and the people received all the water they needed.

Apply – We may sometimes complain about our circumstances rather than seeking God and asking for His instructions.  Once He gives us His instructions, we must be faithful to carry them out faithfully and completely.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Proverbs 10:17 ESV Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

Proverbs 1:7 ESV The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 16

Highlight – Exodus 16:1-5 New Living Translation

Manna and Quail from Heaven

16 Then the whole community of Israel set out from Elim and journeyed into the wilderness of Sin,[a] between Elim and Mount Sinai. They arrived there on the fifteenth day of the second month, one month after leaving the land of Egypt.[b] 2 There, too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron.

3 “If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they will gather food, and when they prepare it, there will be twice as much as usual.”

Explain – The whole community of Israel was complaining about Moses and Aaron just one month after being set free from Egypt after 430 years.  Gods answer was to meet their needs with manna from heaven, raining down to feed them all.  God also used the opportunity to test them to see if they were to follow His instructions.

Apply – God appreciates the faithful and detests complainers.  We would be wise to bridle our tongue from complaining, and speak faithfully and confidently in the reliability of the Lord.

James 5:9 ESV Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 15

Highlight – Exodus 15:22-27 New Living Translation           

Bitter Water at Marah

22 Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled in this desert for three days without finding any water. 23 When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means “bitter”).

24 Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded. 25 So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink.  It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him. 26 He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”

27 After leaving Marah, the Israelites traveled on to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there beside the water.

Explain – The Lord led the people to the bitter waters at the oasis of Marah.  The people complained about the bitter waters.  Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and He instructed Moses what to do to make the water pure.  He explained to Moses that if he would listen carefully to the voice of the Lord, do what is right in His sight, obey His commands, keep His decrees, they could avoid diseases that were sent to the Egyptians.  He is the God of healing.

Apply - We see that God purposely led them to the bitter waters of Marah for a valuable life lesson.  We can be confused when God leads us to what we think is the wrong destination.  We can further confuse ourselves by trying to understand the ways of God with our own meager mortal minds.  We must remember that God’s ways are best, we need to trust in Him fully, mind, soul, mind, and strength.  We must listen and obey and we will experience His peace and joy through our life journey.

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 14

Highlight Exodus 14:15-18 New Living Translation

Escape through the Red Sea

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! 16 Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will charge in after the Israelites. My great glory will be displayed through Pharaoh and his troops, his chariots, and his charioteers. 18 When my glory is displayed through them, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the Lord!”

Explain – God provided a way out for the Israelites that was not obvious, that in human thinking was not even considered as it would be impossible for mere mortals to part a sea to make a path of escape.  This was not only a path of escape, but also a path of judgement for the Egyptians as the water thundered down on them.

Apply –  We should not be in fear or be dismayed by our apparent circumstances as God can make a way where for us there seems no way.  He can turn things completely around.  Our challenge is to trust Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength despite all worldly appearances.

Highlight Exodus 13:20-22 New Living Translation

20 The Israelites left Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 

21 The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. 22 And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.

Explain – God provided a pillar of cloud through the daytime and a pillar of fire throughout the night to lead them in the wilderness.  The pillar of cloud blocked the harmful sun rays and provided clear direction for all to follow.  The pillar of fire provided warmth and also provided clear direction for all to follow.

Apply – God has provided us His Word, the Bible as well as the Holy Spirit to provide us guidance and direction in our journey of life.  Like the Israelites, we can wisely faithfully follow God’s direction or we can foolishly try to follow our own thinking.

Psalm 119:105 ESV Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 14:15 ESV “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Luke 10:27 ESV And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

John 14:26 ESV But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

Respond – Lord, I thank You for Your promises and for permitting me to serve You in accomplishing Your will. I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently forever.  I pray for those with hardened hearts that they will accept You as lord and savior.  Amen.

HEAR Journaling - Exodus 12

Highlight Exodus 12:40-42 New Living Translation

40 The people of Israel had lived in Egypt[c] for 430 years. 41 In fact, it was on the last day of the 430th year that all the Lord’s forces left the land. 42 On this night the Lord kept his promise to bring his people out of the land of Egypt. So this night belongs to him, and it must be commemorated every year by all the Israelites, from generation to generation.

Explain – God fulfilled His promise, in 430 years the descendants of Israel were released to return to Canaan, the promised land.

Apply – Do we have the faith and patience to wait on God to fulfill His promises for our lives?  

Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Highlight Exodus 11:1-3 New Living Translation

Death for Egypt’s Firstborn

11 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will strike Pharaoh and the land of Egypt with one more blow. After that, Pharaoh will let you leave this country. In fact, he will be so eager to get rid of you that he will force you all to leave.2 Tell all the Israelite men and women to ask their Egyptian neighbors for articles of silver and gold.” 3 (Now the Lord had caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the people of Israel. And Moses was considered a very great man in the land of Egypt, respected by Pharaoh’s officials and the Egyptian people alike.)

Explain – God explained to Moses that there will be one last plague on Pharoah and the Egyptians.  The Lord caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the people of Israel, to give them silver and gold.  

Apply – God will accomplish His will despite any opposing forces. We can partner with God in accomplishing His will and reap the reward of Joy and peace through eternity, or we will be flutily opposing Him to our own destruction.

Joshua 24:15 ESV And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Deuteronomy 30:19 ESV I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,
