  • Heather Solves Everything - How To Have a Midlife Crisis

If I say the words, “midlife crisis,” what comes to mind? I always think of a man buying a sports car, or a woman splurging on plastic surgery, probably inspired by watching soap operas with my mom when I was a kid.

A midlife crisis has always been portrayed as a bad thing - as I guess anything that is described as a crisis would be. But does it have to be? I believe that a midlife crisis can be a lot of fun if you do it right! My guest today is here to answer my questions about how to make your midlife crisis a springboard into adventure and transformation on your terms.

  • Heather Solves Everything - The Power Of Solitude

Today’s show is all about the value of solitude. It’s about the power of being on your own once in a while. Today, my guest is ME.

I decided to do a show about being alone because I thought it would be a challenge. And, because sometimes being alone is really good for us. Do you remember my episode with Dr. Keyna Rich, when we talked about self care? Well guess what? About 50% of people consider being alone to be an important component of caring for themselves.

I made up that statistic. I can do that kind of thing when it is just me. Being alone has all kinds of advantages, even though our modern world has tried to convince us that it’s a bad thing.

Today we are going to explore the value of solitude. We’ll talk - well, I’ll talk - about the difference between being alone and being lonely. I’ll share some stories about real life people who lived completely alone. I’ll give you some tips on how to make the best use of your time alone. And, finally, I’ll leave you alone so you can put it all into practice.

  • Heather Solves Everything - Obsessions

Today’s problem is something we all face eventually - the transition from teenage life to adulthood. It’s a big deal for everyone, but for young people on the autism spectrum that transition can be really tough.

Did you know that young adults with autism have lower employment rates than people with other disabilities? A report published by the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute tells us that for two-thirds of young people with autism, that transition from high school to adulthood was pretty much not happening, with no real plan or support for developing a career or plan for higher education within two years of graduating high school.

One solution may be in entrepreneurship, and my guest is paving the way. My guest today is Betty Proctor.

Betty Proctor  was working as a social worker at the FSU Autism Institute when the clock started ticking. Her daughter was about to graduate from high school, and she knew that she needed to spend more time with her.  She also saw a need for her daughter, who is on the Autism spectrum, to develop her passions and strengths into a career for her future.  So, she took a leap of faith and left her job to partner with her on making and selling jewelry at local markets.

That leap landed in Railroad Square, where they opened Obsessions Gift Shop, and then to a non-profit organization called Motivating People Through Arts and Crafts (MPAC)

MPAC serves as a resource for the community to provide social, life, employment, and entrepreneurial skills while educating the public on awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Communications Disorders. Today we’re going to explore how MPAC works and most importantly, how we can help.

  • Heather Solves Everything - The Science of Gratitude

Today’s problem affects 100% of people, and it’s getting worse every year, and affecting younger and younger as the problem grows. In fact, we have now gotten to a point where the number of people and amount of money available to solve the problem may not be enough. That’s why it’s so important for all of us to learn how we can help.

The problem is stress, and the mental, emotional, and physical toll that it takes on our bodies, lives, and relationships. Just a couple of episodes ago, we talked about self care, and the ways our bodies talk to us when it is in need of TLC. Today’s show is about one of the solutions: mindful meditation.

My guest this week is Stacey Turknett, a Certified Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher. Stacey has over 20 years of personal practice steeped in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Stacey has been in education for 12 years as a Character Education Coach where she taught social-emotional learning (SEL) and mindfulness before founding Stacey Turknett Meditation and Mindfulness Coaching. She studied Sociology and Criminal Justice at Fort Hays State University where she also earned a certificate in Life Transitions and a certificate in Multiculturism. Stacey is a Certified Meditation & Mindfulness Teacher from The School of Positive Transformation and holds a certificate from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (foundation 1 certificate) from Mindful Leader Foundation.

  • Heather Solves Everything - Politics In Church

Welcome to Heather Solves Everything, the show where I take credit for making the world a better place by introducing you to people who actually are.

This is a problem solving show, and each week my guests and I talk about the everyday problems of life, how they are solving them, and how you can tap into your unique strengths to be a problem solver, too.

People have been talking about today’s show for generations, even though we’re not supposed to talk about it. After all, Jonathan Swift said in 1712, “You cannot reason someone out of something he or she was not reasoned into.”

Mark Twain said about today’s topic, “I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics, a man’s reasoning powers are not above a monkey’s.”

Yep, I’ve got my friend the Rev. Sheldon Steen back in the studio today to talk about religion and politics.

Rev. Steen has been working in ministry for fifteen years, earning a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology from Columbia Theological Seminary. He began his professional work in youth ministry in Florida and Georgia, and then as the Pastor of Jasper First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, Florida.

After serving as a Parish Associate at Faith Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, Sheldon directed the campus ministry at UKirk Tallahassee, serving Florida State University and Florida A&M University. He joined Christ Presbyterian Church in June, 2020, leading the northeast Tallahassee congregation through the COVID-19 pandemic and at a time when almost every element of our lives, including our spirituality, is politicized.

  • Heather Solves Everything - Next-Level Living

This week’s show is about next-level living. Some might say it’s about diversity. Compassion. Inclusion. Equality. Full participation in life. It’s also about how we can help others live fully and authentically.

The CDC reports that Developmental disabilities occur among all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. In the United States, about one in six, or about 17%, of children aged 3 through 17 years have one or more developmental disabilities, such as:

    • ADHD,
    • autism spectrum disorder,
    • cerebral palsy,
    • hearing loss,
    • intellectual disability,
    • learning disability,
    • vision impairment,
    • and other developmental delays.

We do a good job of supporting people with developmental disabilities when they are children. But when they get older, many of those support programs go away. Then, they are more at risk. One organization that is working to solve this problem is the Leon Advocacy and Resource Center, and my guest today is the CEO, Phillip Hall.

Leon Advocacy Resource Center’s purpose is to end the segregation and devaluing of persons with developmental and other disabilities by promoting supports and services that provide access to all of community life.

They work to create a place where all people are valued and contributing citizens. Our purpose is to end the segregation and devaluing of persons with developmental and other disabilities by helping them live, work, and fully participate in their community.

Today we’re going to talk about how that happens and how we can help. And, we’ll dig into how we can discover the unique strengths that make us part of solutions wherever we are.

  • Heather Solves Everything - Treat Yo'Self!

This is a problem solving show, and each week my guests and I talk about the everyday problems of life, how they are solving them, and how you can tap into your unique strengths to solve your problems.

Problems like how the heck we are supposed to do all of the things. Do I even need to tell you that people these days are 100% completely tired, worn out, overworked, overwhelmed, and generally zonked?

It’s not just you. It’s everyone! In my work as a health coach I hear it every day - we all know that we SHOULD take better care of ourselves, but like, when?

WHEN is a good question, too. When is the last time you took a day off.  When did you last press pause, opt out, unplug, and go AWOL on the daily grind?

Today’s show is going to be your gateway to self care. We’re going to talk about why it’s important - you might be surprised  - how to tell what you really need, how to actually make it happen, and most importantly, how to not feel guilty for it.

My guest is Dr. Kenya Rich, a licensed psychologist at Counseling and Psychological Services at Florida State University, where she provides individual and group psychotherapy and is involved with training of doctoral students. She earned her bachelors degree in psychology from Wayne State University and graduated with a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami (Go Canes!). She has 15 years of experience working with college students and adults on topics such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.  In her free time, Kenya enjoys spending time with her husband, two teenage children, and two beloved cats. Her self care is running, dancing salsa, and is an avid barre enthusiast.

    Let’s get into it!
