The amidah, or the standing prayer, has 18 benedictions (or prayers) embedded in it and is traditionally prayed by the Jewish people three times a day. Two of these 18 prayers are a prayer for the end of the exile of the 12 tribes of Israel and a prayer for the coming of the Messiah. The coming of the Messiah is associated with the coming of Elijah who precedes the Messiah. Ever since the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Romans in 70 AD, the Jews have prayed three times a day for the gathering of the 12 tribes of Israel which, for them, is synonymous with redemption or the coming of the Messiah. If Messiah is going to come and gather the 12 tribes of Israel and end their exile, it is also taught that Elijah must precede the coming of the Messiah. Focus: John the Bapist was Born at Passover ~ We have been looking at the principle that that before the Messiah comes, that Elijah will precede his coming. In believing that Yeshua is the Messiah and that He has already come, we need to have had an Elijah that preceded his first coming, and then believing that He is coming again, we need to see that Elijah will precede His second coming. Focus: The Ministry and Message of John the Baptist ~ We have been looking at the book of Luke and understanding why the book of Luke begins with explaining the background, circumstances and events regarding John the Baptist. The message and the ministry of Elijah is to restore all things. John the Baptist preceded Yeshua, and so he functioned in the role of “Elijah” to precede the first coming of Messiah. The ministry and the message of John the Baptist was to turn the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom and truth of torah, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Similarly, there will be an Elijah message and ministry that manifests just prior to the second coming of the Messiah.

Here is the destiny of the Northern Kingdom. They are scattered to the nations. They are cut off from the covenant. They become the “broken branches” from the Olive tree. But then, they come to know Yeshua as Messiah. They return to Torah. They will ultimately reunite with Southern Kingdom and they will appoint one head over them all, the Messiah, the King of Israel.

Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel. Hosea 1:11

Israel is described as a green olive tree whose branches were broken off:

The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.

Ultimately the olive tree will be restored when BOTH the wild branches (Israel, Northern kingdom) and the natural branches (Judah, Southern kingdom) are grafted back into the Olive tree. Yeshua’s family consists of Jewish believers and non-Jewish believers.

And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? Romans 11: 23-24

Salvation by grace through faith is a Torah concept. It is established in the Torah when the God of Israel redeemed his people out of Egypt. When the children of Israel placed the blood of the lamb on the doorposts of their homes they did this in faith. Faith is obedience to what God says. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

This is not a brand new New Testament concept. It is a concept that affirms what was laid down in principle when the children of Israel were redeemed out of Egypt.

Notice the pattern. FIRST the children of Israel were saved by faith through grace OUT of Egypt. THEN they went to Mt Sinai where they learned the Torah, God’s instructions for how to live their lives.

The name of Yeshua’s covenant family is the House of Jacob. It was Jacob’s name that was changed to Israel. If we are going to understand who is the House of Jacob, we must understand Jacob’s family and the distinction between Northern kingdom and Southern Kingdom. The house of Jacob got divided into Northern kingdom and Southern kingdom (1 Kings 12). The Southern Kingdom are known as Jews, and they are named after the leading tribe of the Southern kingdom, the tribe of Judah. The Northern Kingdom are known as Ephraim, or the House of Israel, or the House of Joseph and consists of the ten tribes of the North.
