When we use the terms Judaism and Christianity to refer to the people who believe in the God of Israel, it can cause us to misunderstand our bible. We need to understand the biblical name of the covenant family of the God of Israel. What is the name of this covenant family? It is the house of Jacob. There is a literal house of Jacob. These are the people and their descendants who were literally at Mt Sinai when the Torah was given. These are a people who believe in Yeshua as Messiah and they are regarded as the redeemed House of Jacob. Yeshua is the one who brought His people out of Egypt, Yeshua is the one who gave the Torah at Mt Sinai, and the name of His covenant family is the House of Jacob. They include all 12 tribes of Israel.

Is that what this argument really is about: that you must be circumcised to be saved? The non-Jews who are RETURNING to the God of Israel, RETURNING to the Torah, are receiving circumcised hearts, hearts of flesh that love Yeshua and seek to follow His Torah, this is in fulfillment of the prophecy of Amos 9: 11-12:

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: hat they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, says the LORD that does this.

In this session, we will also look at the ruling that came from the Jerusalem Council concerning the controversy that Paul/Barnabas brought to them. What did the Jerusalem Council advise to new non Jewish new believers who are coming into the covenant family of Yahweh? They are:

*Abstain from the pollution of idols

*abstain from fornication

*abstain from eating animals that have been strangled

*abstain from eating blood.

Why was this the ruling? Why were these four things chosen to receive the non Jew into the covenant family of Yahweh? We will explore these questions in this teaching.

These four necessary things are related to the sins that were committed by the Northern kingdom and we will see how these four things is a ruling to reverse the curse that came upon the Northern kingdom.

The Torah requires that if you are having a Torah dispute about a matter, the Torah requires that you go to Jerusalem and you seek the ruling and council of religious leaders in Jerusalem. (Deuteronomy 17: 8-11).

In becoming a member of Yahweh’s covenant family, Paul is arguing that the weightier matter is that one is circumcised in heart (based on Deut. 10:12,16), believe on Yeshua and follow His Torah by the spirit. The Pharisees are arguing that for someone to join the covenant family of Yahweh, one must go through a conversion process into Judaism, culminating in physical circumcision (based on Gen. 17: 9-11), and then follow the Oral Torah/Talmud and the authority of the Pharisees/rabbis.

Paul and Barnabas go to Jerusalem to get a ruling on this matter from the Jerusalem Council. The Council gives the follow ruling, that non-Jews who are new to the faith should follow. We need to have a background and a context for the understanding the ruling that came from the council at Jerusalem. This is the implicit understanding that the Apostles and elders believed which provides background to the ruling:

*The house of Jacob would repent of their sins

*The house of Jacob will seek to follow the Torah of the Messiah Yeshua

*The Messiah will reunite Northern kingdom and Southern kingdom

*All the nations will join themselves to the redeemed house of Jacob

*This will be associated with a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit
