And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name. 1 Kings 18: 30-31
At the deeper sod level, what do these verses mean? First, Elijah repairs the altar of God.
The word repair, in Hebrew is “rapha” which means “to heal” the altar. How do you “heal” an altar? You get the mixed worship and the Baal worship OUT of the worship.
Elijah calls the people to repent of the sin of Jeroboam and mixed Baal worship. Elijah is going to call the people of God to come OUT of the mixed worship. What is this mixed worship?
It is the sin of Jeroboam, who changed the TIMES of worship and the LOCATION of worship.
It is the “Sun” day worship and substituting the Feasts of the Lord with an alternate holiday schedule of Christmas and Easter. It is worshiping Jesus AND another god, the god of Baal and Asherah (Ishtar = Easter).
So they feared the LORD, AND made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. They feared the LORD, AND served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. 2 Kings 17: 32-33
And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods. But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they UNTO THIS DAY. 2 Kings 17: 38-41
Elijah also gathered 12 stones to repair the altar. These stones represent the 12 tribes of Israel. Elijah’s message proclaims the gathering and the uniting of the 12 tribes of Israel.
