Alan Freed was an American disc jockey. He was famous for promoting mix of blues, country, rhythm and blues music on the radio in the U.S.A. and Europe under the name of "Rock and Roll". This track is from the CBS radio Camel Rock and Roll Dance Party with Alan Freed. The program is sponsored by Camel cigarettes and the commercials are in the track... listening to them you can understand how so many people were smokers back in the day... Alan Freed had a short and eventful life going from stardom to losing almost everything after he was convicted of accepting "payola" (payments from record companies to play specific records) He rebounded some appearing in several motion pictures as himself... and was eventually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the National Radio Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 43 of cirrhosis brought on by alcoholism. Such characters as Clem Kadiddlehopper and the "Mean WIddle Kid or Junior" were introduced during the show which aired until June 6, 1944... the day before Red was drafted into the army. Without it's star, the program was discontinued and the Nelsons took the opportunity to begin their own radio show called "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet."
