After re-opening earlier this year, the Peoples Theatre is thrilled to announce their fourth and final production for the year. The popular Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. will be on stage from November 8th to December 24th, ensuring the ideal family entertainment to enjoy this Festive Season and ending the year off in the best – and most fun – way possible. The Little Mermaid is jam-packed with instantly recognizable including amongst others; Part of your World, She’s in Love and the Oscar–winning Under the Sea. Renos Nicos Spanoudes chats to Grant Towers about Adventures in Pantoland during Saturday’s Role on Hellenic Radio.

Adventures in Pantoland, opening November 6th 2022 on the Nelson Mandela Theatre stage at Joburg Theatre, is five pantomimes in one: Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Snow White, Jack and The Beanstalk and Peter Pan.  Writer and director Janice Honeyman explains, “We’ll take you on a daring and dangerous quest to retrieve the long-lost, sneakily-stolen Golden Goblet of Goodness.  It’s goodies versus baddies, heroes versus villains, the happies versus the horrids – and you’ll be there with us to conquer greed and recapture the glow of goodness in Pantoland”. “We have quite possibly the finest and most diverse company of South African actors ever assembled for our annual pantomime”, says the show’s executive producer Bernard Jay.  The cast this year will feature (in alphabetical order) Dylan Du Plessis, David Arnold Johnson, Didintle Khunou, Ilse Klink, Hlengiwe Lushaba Madlala, Carmen Pretorius, Brenda Sakellarides, Justin Swartz, Grant Towers and Ben Voss. Dancing, singing and playing every other role in the panto ensemble will be triple-threat performers (also in alphabetical order) Louise Duhain, Tarryn Heard, Elsje Lourens, Gareth Meijsen, Katlego Nche, René Setlhako, Thandaza Silwane, Jordan Soares, Logan Timbre, Kensiwe Tshabalala, Stephan Van Der Walt and Donovan Yaards.

On Saturday morning’s edition of Saturday’s Role With Reno, host Renos Nicos Spanoudes spoke to Tamara Guhrs about The Drowning Eye.

The Drowning Eye is a little-known play by Frantz Fanon, written in 1949. Part love poem, part surrealist narrative, and part philosophical treatise, Fanon’s play reads as a testimony to the power and possibilities of love as an act of resistance. This contemporary reimagining of the text explores the edge between love, shadow and violence.

Tamara Guhrs and Stacy Hardy join forces with KwaSha, the Market Theatre Lab and Windybrow Arts Centre, to present this work at a time when Fanon’s writing has new relevance for a generation of young South Africans questioning the limits and possibilities of revolution today.

The Drowning Eye is performed in the midst of the exhibition, Revolutionary Love, which seeks to explore the role of historical loves within revolutionary movements. Both works are made possible by funding from the French Institute South Africa (IFAS) and Mazarz, with additional research supported by the Neubauer Collegium for Culture & Society, University of Chicago.

This thrilling new version of Eugène Ionesco’s gripping play is based on a translation by Donald Watson. It is a darkly entertaining theatre production about enforcing power by using knowledge and culture as a weapon. Set in a small university town, an eager eighteen-year-old student arrives at the Professor’s home for a lesson. The action begins in a naturalistic way but shifts into a stylistic and visual feast as more surrealist and absurdist events take hold. What starts as a farcical interaction between the two becomes something more sinister.
