SECRET things belong to the LORD

30% of American homes (40M total) provide some level of free care to loved ones. This % + # is much higher if we count caregivers who are over 50yoa. Most caregivers donate 26 hours/week. 25% are sandwiched between caring for their own children under 18yoa at same time caring for their aging parent. Men now account for 42% of caregiving. And 10% of kids 15-22yoa are caring for aging parents/grandparents also. The avg caregiver pays $7500/yr out-of-pocket, after-taxes to support care receiver. ALL of these #s + %s will increase for next 20 years. 

I propose as society we do 2 things to incentivize families to care for aging loved ones. You can read more at my website What I Do | Helping Mom. We should provide $75K tax credit to families who take-in an aging family member, to live with them full-time. Second, we should compensate full-time trained family members $50K/year to care for family members determined by their medical doctors to be 100% disabled. This is far cheaper than $130K/yr avg for nursing homes, plus quality & quantity of care will be much higher. There are measures we can build in to avoid waste, fraud & abuse.

Don’t pout on Pisgah; Get Perspective

14,600 days the children of God walked in circles, when they should have walked 11 days straight into the promised land. All now felt lost--Moses as the greatest caregiver of all time told he cant go in; his protoges/children in faith & work (Joshua and Caleb) who must go it alone from now on, without Moses, and; the 2M new care receivers who are kids of the last 2M care receivers who perished for disbelief in God and hatred toward Moses.

But God is clear: while you may feel lost, you are not. You just have lost your context. Let Me provide that context. Then you will have direction. There is work for you to do Moses--charge, equip, strengthen Joshua and Caleb; there is work for you do to J&C--learn from Moses, the best coach/leader in Old Testament, and trust Me in new land I am taking you. What Moses did in wilderness wont apply in promised land--so learn principles, dont memorize rules. And for the 2M, FOLLOW J&C, and DO what you must in promised land where I am taking you--starting today! Climbing up Pisgahs gives us perspective, and hope. Seek the high place. 

As caregivers: see God, not the giants. Look above obstacles to the One who knows none. Learn from this story of Moses. Keep giving care with ability God gives you. Trust God for what is needed in the future, whatever that will look like. He will be with you there as He is today here. Each day has its challenges. But you are sufficient in them. So, dont poubt--give it out! Seek the high ground, where your gaze is fixed.

Quality of Life is the mental and physical health of our care receiver. Improving QL is the basis of our $3T health care system. Everything we do as caregivers either adds to or diminishes from QL for our parent.

QL is made of mixture of peace, harmony, purpose, relationships, happiness, and growth. As caregivers we can enhance the external factors affecting QL for our loved one:

Secure outside (hack, schemes, abuse, robbed)

Safe inside (fall proof)

Structure (order, balance, hierarchy, daily habits)

Stable (battle rhythm, consistency, planning, ordering of day & days) 

Surprise (fun, once per day, mix up)

Stimulating (hard to do, may req tricking) 

Serenity (calm, no rancor, peace)

As Senior Level Project Manager for US Army & Federal Govt I was responsible for $2BN projects in many states, & overseas. The same skills then help me now caregive for mom, including: defining overarching goal, thinking strategically + deciding tactically, developing meta-awareness about decisions made, communicating them effectively within team, and never tearing down fences till I first know why it was put up.
