Happy 2020, hennapreneurs! I’m thrilled to welcome the new year with you! Recently, I’ve been having lots of conversation with henna artists around the world about their business goals for 2020 (and what challenges they may suspect stand in their way). A common theme has appeared across the board: collectively, they shared that they are lacking confidence in their art and/or in their ability to run a successful business. In this week’s episode, I’m sharing three ways that you can increase your confidence (and simultaneously, your creativity!) as a henna artist so that you can see more growth in your business.

It was when I heard her say, "I'm just a festival artist..." that I felt my heart sink. And it's not the first time that I've heard comments like these. Over the years I've worked in this industry, I've heard many artists classify themselves as being "just" this or that type of artist - and never has this been said with confidence or an air of accomplishment. Honestly, I'd like to see this change. So in today's episode, I'm talking about what I've come to call "the henna hierarchy," and I'm breaking down exactly why it's all just an illusion. Every type of henna artist has their unique value, advantage, and skill set, and in this episode I'm sharing exactly why you should be hella proud of being the type of henna artist that you are.

As a homeschooler, I'm constantly reading this or that book to share with the kids. Recently I found myself knee deep in Aesop's Fables, and I came across a short story about a fox and a toad that made me think of the henna community. While I won't spoil the story for you here in the show notes, I will say this: there are plenty of quack toads out there who would be more than happy to give you bad advice about how to grow your technical and business skills (and charge you a fee for it, too). In today's episode, I'm talking openly about my thoughts on what it takes to be a mentor, what I recommend when it comes time to choosing someone to support you in your business, and giving you some tips on how to get the information you need to build your henna business regardless of your budget.

Last week during a live Ask Me Anything session on Facebook, I made the mistake of saying that we were in the month of February (versus the very cold November that we're actually experiencing at the moment). What can I say?! My mind is already full of excitement and anticipation for the new year! In today's episode, I'm getting personal with you about the intentions that I'm setting for the new year (and the new decade!). With 2020 sitting just on the horizon, I can't help but think about what's coming next for me, for you, and for Hennapreneur!

"I want to stand out from the other henna artists in my area, but I have no idea how." I hear it a LOT, and from artists all over the world. So in today's episode, I'm talking to you about one small shift that you can make in your business to begin to set yourself apart: specializing. I know it might sound scary to focus all of your attention on a single service type, but this is the beginning of building a marketing strategy - promise. Let's get to it!

I had the pleasure of spending the past weekend in the company of over 50 henna artists, and during that time, I was included in many conversations regarding the use of contracts with clients - and more specifically, the acceptance of deposits alongside of those agreements. In today's episode, I'm sharing with you how accepting "deposits" could actually be placing your time, money, and business at risk - and how a small shift in language can better protect you from losses.

“Summer is over, so no one is booking henna appointments anymore. Once festival season ends, my business goes on hold. Nobody is wearing henna in the winter time - it’s too cold for that.” Y’all, I’m calling foul. In this episode, I’m breaking down why the weather isn’t to blame for why you aren’t booking clients in the winter months, and inviting you to troubleshoot the gaps in your business so that you can enjoy healthy revenue even in the off season.

As the end of the year approaches and I work through the final portions of the Accelerator program with some phenomenal hennapreneurs, I've been doing a lot of reflecting on the lessons that I've learned as a henna professional. In this episode, I'm sharing ten pieces of advice that I wish I could go back and give to myself in the earlier years of my business. From addressing my belief systems about money to preparing for the hurt of broken friendships post-business, I'm putting this message in a bottle for those henna artists out there who might just need some unfiltered advice about how the journey of building a henna business actually looks from someone on the other side of the table.
[01:38] A little backstory about why it's so important to me to share these nuggets of advice with you
[04:50] #1 You need to know who your ideal client is
[08:18] #2 Be wise in choosing who you accept business advice from
[16:40] #4 Being a beginner is okay
[21:46] #5 Keep your eyes on your own paper
[25:15] #6 Best is relative
[29:42] #7 Be careful who you surround yourself with
[35:12] #8 Not everyone is rooting for you
[41:27] #9 Don't wait to address your money mindset
[46:23] #10 Perfect is never done

I believe that the biggest challenge that faces us as business owners isn't the business itself - it's our mindset. In this episode, I'm talking all about the power of our mind and asking you the hard question: Is self-doubt standing between you and success?
