Students in the English-Spanish immersion program at Elizabeth Holladay Elementary are 97% less likely to be chronically absent than their peers, according to Henrico Schools officials. HCPS established its first dual language immersion program, which serves a group of kindergarten through second-grade students at Holladay, in August 2021. Classes are taught in both English and Spanish every day, and the K-2 cohort is evenly split between native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. A Yorktown woman was arrested April 3 after the Transportation Security Administration found a loaded handgun in her carry-on bag at Richmond International Airport. The 9mm firearm was loaded with 10 bullets, including one in the chamber, the TSA said. The gun was discovered as the woman entered the security checkpoint; the X-ray unit on the carry-on bag alerted to the weapon, prompting additional inspection by TSA officers. A 55-year-old Henrico man was killed Thursday night when the car he was driving was struck while trying to cross the westbound lanes of West Broad Street near Short Pump, according to Henrico Police. Eugene Robert Coleman Jr. was trying to turn across the street just before 10 p.m. from a shopping center to the eastbound lanes, according to police. A 15-year-old girl from Highland Springs has been found safe after an Amber Alert was issued for her abduction on Thursday morning. Ronique Poteat was found in a vehicle traveling on I-95 south near the Chamberlayne Avenue exit at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday, during a traffic stop, according to Henrico Police.
