Lawmakers unanimously supported a resolution that encouraged Virginians to “ponder the cosmic eons beyond” and consider the impact of increased light pollution. Del. David Reid, D-Loudoun, introduced House Joint Resolution 74 to designate the week of the new moon in April as International Dark Sky Week. Gov. As the federal government considers requiring two crewmembers on all trains, similar legislation to increase rail safety statewide passed both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly. Last year's Norfolk Southern Railway Company train derailment in Ohio – which caused some cars to catch fire and spill dangerous materials, with some infiltrating local waterways – sparked the state legislation and a greater focus on railway safety standards. When children or teens experience a mental health crisis, often the first place they go is a crowded hospital emergency room, where they wait hours until receiving care. Now, Henrico will have a space dedicated for youngsters who need immediate mental health services. The Youth Crisis Receiving Center opened Feb. 29 with a ribbon-cutting held by Henrico County officials and leaders from St. Joseph’s Villa, a children’s nonprofit that provides health services and other supports. Tickets are now on sale for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association's 2024 Wheelchair Basketball National Championship in Henrico County. New flood hazard maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency indicate that about 7,000 Henrico homes could be at some risk from flooding. The maps, released March 1, show updated data on water flow and drainage patterns and designate areas that are at low, moderate and high risk of flooding.
