The Rotary Club of West Richmond honored a longtime Henrico resident Aug. 9 for his years of Rotary service. During its weekly meeting, the club recognized Ken Perry, chairman of VAMAC, Inc. for his dedication and community service. Perry is the longest-serving member of the club in its 60-plus year history. He is also a past president of the group, and its members Wednesday established “The Kenneth M. Perry New Member of the Year Award” in his honor. It will be given annually. Henrico Schools will have weapons detectors at all high schools by the first day of school, Aug. 21, school system officials said Wednesday. Two main entrances of high schools will each have two to three weapons detectors staffed by school security officers, school resource officers, or school administrators. Officials hope to place them in middle schools next and then elementary schools to cover all 73 schools at some point during the 2023-2024 school year. Local, state and federal officials will host an open-house-style meeting Aug. 23 at the Varina Area Library to address community concerns about ethylene oxide (EtO) and per- and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS) in Eastern Henrico. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and will include representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Department of Health, federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and Henrico County. Henrico supervisors Aug. 8 unanimously approved a .4-million construction contract with Rainbow Construction Corp. to convert the softball field at Pouncey Tract Park in Short Pump to a 12-court pickleball complex, with two championship-style courts, covered spectator seating and LED sports lighting. The 10 standard courts will measure 34 feet by 64 feet, while the championship courts will be slightly larger, at 44 feet by 74 feet, with more hardscaping beyond the baselines and sidelines. Dear Editor: I read with interest the concerns and solutions that the majority of citizens who are opposed to road speed issues on Anoka Road. It amazes me how all of this effort and meetings presented with no clear consensus or solutions. Henrico parents at Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s “Parents Matter” conversation in Henrico Tuesday raised concerns about rampant social media use and the need for more technology restrictions in schools. On Sept. 23, Full Circle Grief Center will host its 4th Annual Miles in Memory Remembrance Walk/Run at Deep Run Park.
