The James River Association is launching its seasonal boat and paddle programs this month. The guided river trips are open to the public and offer opportunities for participants to engage with the river through birdwatching tours, photography excursions, batteau rides, and sturgeon-watching trips while learning about the wildlife, history, and natural resources of the river and its tributaries. Trips will take place in each of JRA’s three regions, which include Richmond, Williamsburg, and Lynchburg. The University of Richmond "Big Yard Sale" (a sell-off of student discards) returns May 20 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the east concourse of Robins Stadium. Signs will be posted to direct attendees. Motorists driving on Quioccasin Road should be alert to a new traffic pattern that began May 8.  The Virginia Department of Transportation put a lane shift into place on Quioccasin Road between Pemberton Road and Gaskins Road through June 1 for a pipe replacement project. The Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred May 10 on I-95 between the 85 and 86-mile markers in Henrico County. The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. when someone from an unknown vehicle began firing at a 2013 Nissan traveling northbound on the interstate. The driver of the Nissan, a 38-year-old male from Richmond, was shot in the arm but managed to continue driving to 1099 Air Park Road in Ashland, Va. As Virginia school divisions investigate increases in chronic student absences, data shows the state’s homeless youth rate is returning close to pre-pandemic levels. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia recorded about 10,000 homeless youth in public schools annually. Those numbers dropped by nearly 3,000 students in the 2020-21 school year. Since then, however, they have steadily increased, reaching about 9,000 students, as pandemic-era protections and extra funding for programs like rental assistance and food assistance have expired. Rent in all but five Virginia counties increased in a 10-year period, according to a Capital News Service analysis of U.S. Census Bureau gross median rent estimates.
