Absentee in-person voting for the June 20 primary election has begun at Henrico’s Voter Registration and Elections offices. County voters can cast their ballots at the offices’ Henrico Government Center and Eastern Government Center locations from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, through June 16. The offices will be open for in-person voting on the two Saturdays prior to the election, June 10 and 17. An additional voting location will open at Varina Area Library June 12-17. University of Richmond students were among the winners of the Environmental Justice Video Challenge for Students, a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and co-sponsors American Public Health Association, the Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities – Network, Environmental Defense Fund, Environmental Justice journal, and Groundwork US. Henrico County Recreation and Parks officials will host a grand opening celebration for the Dorey Spray Park Saturday, June 3, from 11:30 a.m. to noon. The spray park is located adjacent to the barn at Dorey Park. In addition to the spray park, guests can enjoy the opening day of the Dorey Park Farmers Market and the Celebrate Varina event from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public. The Autism Society of Central Virginia has launched a new training and designation program to help business leaders create inclusive and supportive spaces for people impacted by autism. The Henrico County Department of Public Works will hold a public information meeting Tuesday, May 16 on projects to improve safety and mobility on Hilliard Road as well as to construct the southern portion of the Fall Line Trail. Several Henrico County schools and parks soon will become greener, thanks to a new partnership between the county, its public school system and local nonprofit organization Capital Trees. Competing in the online division, the Citizen earned awards in the VPA’s 2022 News and Advertising Contest for photography and reporting. Beginning May 21, GRTC service changes will include realignments of many routes to serve the new Downtown Transfer Station throughout the day for an easier way to transfer between local bus routes. The Transfer Station is expected to open in mid-June. In the meantime, buses will serve the Temporary Transfer Plaza on 9th Street between Marshall and Leigh Streets. Route 4A Oakwood/Montrose and Route 4B Oakwood/Darbytown will be extended to Oakwood to provide 30-minute service where route 13 currently operates. Deep Run High School The Wildcats’ girls’ soccer team has been on fire this season. The team is ranked second in the state and 60th in the nation by MaxPreps.com. Deep Run started off the season 9-0, allowing just one goal in the process, thanks to All-Region selection Kate Finkler, who has had 41 saves this season. Offensively, Gianna Chrapek leads the way with eight goals, averaging nearly one goal per game.
