Henrico and Richmond residents now may schedule COVID-19 vaccinations directly through the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts without needing to pre-register, RHHD officials announced April 26. Henrico Police are seeking leads from the public on a cold case incident from 2007 that left a man dead. The James River Association will once again provide its annual ‘Kids in Kayaks’ programs to get students in the Middle and Lower James River Watershed on the water for several days of adventure, appreciation, and education. The program began at the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail and Baltimore National Heritage Area in 2015. In 2018, Fort Monroe created a new chapter in collaboration with the James River Association and National Parks Conservation Association. Virginia universities plan a return to campuses in the fall, but there are questions if the COVID-19 vaccine can be mandated. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration only authorized the vaccine for emergency purposes, according to Lisa Lee, professor of public health at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.  A Henrico County sixth-grader appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show April 22, showcasing her artwork made from recycled materials in honor of Earth Day and Earth Week. It was actually the second appearance on the show in the past year for Ashlyn Nelson, a student at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. Clarkson arranged for Nelson to work with nationally recognized artist Angela Pozzi, with The Washed Ashore Project, on a 13-foot sturgeon made from trash found at the beach. Henrico County officials have been planning to host a Juneteenth celebration at Dorey Park for months, and recently they finalized those plans. The holiday celebrates the day that news of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the westernmost Confederate state of Texas. The proclamation went into effect in 1863, but word did not make it to the westernmost Confederate-controlled territories until the arrival of Union troops in Galveston Bay, Texas on June 19, 1865.
