Seven thousand local senior citizens will receive their first COVID-19 vaccine doses Jan. 29-31 during three mass vaccination events in the region. The events will provide doses for residents of Henrico, Hanover, Richmond and Chesterfield who previously registered or completed interest forms online. Virginia’s apparent sluggish roll-out of the two COVID-19 vaccines may actually not be quite as bad as it appears, Henrico Health Director Danny Avula told reporters during a press briefing at Richmond Raceway Thursday. Avula, tapped by Gov. Henrico 4-H will offer three virtual special interest clubs this spring to help youth explore animal science, the Mars Base Camp and water through hands-on activities. Henrico County reported 102 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday – one of the county’s lowest single-day counts this year – according to the Virginia Department of Health. The seven-day moving count continues to fall sharply, reaching an average of 147 daily cases. Also Wednesday, there were two new hospitalizations related to the virus reported in Henrico, and no new virus-related deaths, according to the VDH. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam left it up to individual school boards to decide whether students should return to in-person learning this year, but state legislators who are unhappy with that decision are now taking steps to try and force the localities to offer in-person learning. Henrico County has provided COVID-19 vaccination doses to more people per 100,000 of population (more than 11,000) than any locality in Virginia, according to county and state data.
