Mary Eunice Farmer, 80, of Sandston passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. She retired from Suntrust Bank and was a member of Highland Springs Church of the Nazarene. She loved quilting, getting together with her family and spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Elma Peck; her husband, James Pleasant Farmer; three brothers, Newton Peck, Hadford Peck and Carlos Peck; sister, Sarah Euva Reynolds; and a great-grandson, Parker James. Henrico’s unemployment rate remained essentially unchanged from November to December last year, according to new data from the VEC. The county finished both months with an unemployment rate of 4.7%. Henrico’s workforce shrank just slightly – by 157 people, to 176,683 – from November to December, the data showed. The number of people employed in the county also shrank slightly, from 168,604 to 168,330. December’s unemployment rate in the county was about twice what it was in December 2019 (2.4%), the data showed. Southbound lanes on Brook Road between Ridge Road and Lakeside Avenue in Henrico’s Northside are closed for emergency repairs Friday because of a water main break break in the area. Henrico Firefighters battled a fire at an industrial building in Varina Feb. 4, shortly before 10:30 p.m. It happened in the 5700 block of Eastport Boulevard, near Charles City Road and Laburnum Avenue. The automatic fire sprinkler system had activated and the building was evacuated. Fire crews saw smoke coming from the building when they arrived, located the fire by 10:34 p.m. and controlled the spread by 10:50 despite zero visibility levels inside the warehouse. Henrico Police have arrested and charged an 18-year old in connection with a double shooting in Henrico Thursday night. Police charged Rhashawn Jaequan Singleton with two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the shooting, which happened at about 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of Laburnum Avenue and Mechanicsville Turnpike in the parking lot of two businesses. The Henrico County Police Division assisted Henrico County’s “Spread the Love Initiative,” sponsored by the county’s EngAGE program for seniors, by providing 200 Valentine’s Day cards for residents of Henrico long-term care facilities. EngAGE serves Henrico seniors, their families and caregivers, and the program is hoping to provide a Valentine’s Day car for all 8,000 or so seniors in the county’s long-term care facilities. The first planned residential units within the footprint of Virginia Center Commons could take shape soon, and others may not be far behind. Henrico students will begin returning to school on a staggered basis Feb. 22, following a Henrico School Board vote Thursday afternoon. By a vote of 4-1, the board opted to return pre-kindergarten through second-grade students whose families chose an in-person return on that day, followed by a March 1 return for grades 3 through 5, as well as sixth and ninth-graders, and a March 8 return for return for all other middle and high school students. Lawmakers unanimously shot down legislation this week that would have required employers to provide hazard pay to essential employees and provide protective equipment in the event of a stay-at-home order. Del. Hala S. Ayala, D-Woodbridge, said she introduced House Bill 2015 to help protect and further compensate employees required to work during a shelter-in-place or stay-at-home order. The measure required that employers authorized to remain open must pay 1.5 times the regular rate of pay for hours worked during a stay-at-home or shelter-in-place order.
