Welcome to part 1 of our three-part series on Faith, Hope, and Love. For the next few weeks, Lisa and Ali will unpack this biblical “triad” one by one— how scripture defines each term and what it looks like to live them out in real life. Kicking off the series with “faith,” Lisa gets personal and tells some of her family’s story of learning to trust God amidst uncertainty. Ali talks about the “control trap” we all can fall into and then challenges us to evaluate where our faith and loyalties truly lie: Is it in God and His promises, or is it in our own understanding and desired outcomes?

Whether we realize it or not, our daily habits form us. They create our foundation, and if we do them long enough, they can help us establish roots. But let’s be honest—good habits are not only hard to form, they are hard to keep. Many of us talk ourselves out of doing the things we want to do—or know we should do—because we “just aren’t feeling it” or because it doesn’t look a certain way. In this week’s podcast, Lisa and Ali talk about what it looks like to prioritize time with the Lord without the pressure of high expectations. 

When God asks us to do something outside of our comfort zone, how do we respond? Do we accept the invitation with a trust-filled “yes!” — or do we hesitate, question, doubt, and give in to our natural instinct to say “no.” In this week’s podcast episode, Ali and Lisa talk about their tendency to live “no-filled lives” and what it looks like to fully surrender to God when we feel one of His nudges. Looking to Mary as an example, we see how God used one woman’s whole-hearted “yes” to carry out His plan to save us all.

Jill Curtin is responsible for Healing Hope, a ministry at Hickory Creek Church that focuses on supporting women struggling with infertility. Drawing from her ministry experience and her own personal story, Jill teaches us how we can come alongside our sisters in Christ who might be going through a challenging season in their lives—what we should say, what we shouldn’t say, and why it is important to be especially sensitive during the holidays.

Our speech matters. What we say and how we choose to say matters to God because it reveals our hearts and it impacts those around us. While the world often encourages us to be snarky and quick-witted, God calls us to something higher. When Jesus tells us to be “salty,” He wants us to use our speech for His glory, whether that means responding to others with grace, refraining from gossip, or being brave enough to share the gospel when the opportunity arises. In this episode of the podcast, Lisa and Ali discuss times when they got it wrong, the power of pausing, and some of the ways we can add “salt” to our everyday conversations and interactions.

Gratitude is one of those virtues everyone agrees is a good practice, but there is a difference between the self-help type of gratitude and faith-based gratitude. One focuses on the gifts, while the other focuses on the Giver. In this special Thanksgiving episode, Ali and Lisa ask the hard question: How can we position our hearts to be content and, even more so, grateful in all circumstances? As Christians, we know that we are not of this world; yet, in the midst of our day to day lives, we can get sucked into wordly measures that can cause us to question our identity, our worth, and our purpose. In this episode, Lisa and Ali remind us that what God values is so much different than what the world values. Greatness in the kingdom is not measured by titles or positions, nor by worldly wins like financial gain and fame. Instead, God cares about our hearts and whether or not we are willing to love, serve, and sacrifice like Jesus.

What does it look like to receive God’s grace? Today’s episode gives us a humbling example. In what will become a recurring feature of the pod, Ali and Lisa look back at previous episodes and admit some of the missteps they’ve made along the way and, more importantly, their need for God’s grace. Knowing this is something we all need, Ali walks us through the steps of understanding and receiving the gospel message, and Lisa invites us all to come before the throne to accept God’s free gift of grace.

No one wants to be called a hypocrite, but the hard truth is that we are all exactly that— sinners who know what is wrong and still goof up. That doesn’t give us a free pass to 

make poor choices, but it does remind us that we have a lot to learn and that we should 

approach God accordingly. Using the story of Paul’s conversion, Ali and Lisa talk about 

owning and welcoming the process of transformation, including the mistakes we will 

make along the way.

In part 2 of this episode, Ali and Lisa go back into their “trash can of lies” and pull out two more lies that can steal our joy and hold us back from living in the fullness of Christ. Ali unpacks what God has to say about the troubles we face, and Lisa reminds us that while we are called to love others, they may not always love us back. No matter what lies the enemy or the world tries to tell us, here’s the Truth: We are fully known and fully loved by a good God. He alone is our solid ground.
