This week we start out with what our minds have led us to believe is a 120% accurate exploration of the evolution of self-deception.
Your MUMsters of Ceremony™ consider how the ability to deceive and detect deception in others has shaped how we systematically deceive ourselves in testable ways.
They laugh about how new insights can unlock an embarrassing cascade of memories that lead to beautifully cringey epiphanies. Crying can feel like a drug, but don't get hooked... forcing that much-needed cry is perhaps the second most awkward therapeutic release.
Ramin informs Shane that not everyone naps in a terrifying fractal swamp of rejuvenation. And finally, the MUMsters™ hope that going to see Tony Robbins while on acid will help build their MUMpire.
The Sad Boys of Comedy Podcasting™ capture the moment they came up with the show title while discussing the evolution of depression.
Anxiety can keep us out of danger, but what utility might depression have? If it doesn’t have utility, why is it pervasive in so many species? If it is so bad for us, why hasn’t evolution gotten rid of it? If it’s good for us, why does it suck so much?
Sometimes other primates experience depression after losing a fight and that might keep them from making the same mistake. Sometimes the best strategy is to pause and reflect.
While Shane and Ramin are only three episodes in, it’s pretty obvious that Mind Under Matter is the podcast that will be the dawn of a new era.
But what's the point of world domination anyway? Does all this incredible content that enriches people’s lives make a difference in the end? And if so, should two people even wield such great power?
Even though rumination can feel like sinking, sometimes what might feel like heading toward the bottom is actually mining for gold.
(Non-Fungible Moment ALERT: In this episode the SBCP™ decide on the name Mind Under Matter and consider how indecisiveness can sometimes be an exploratory tool in the creative process. We recorded a ton of content and experimented for months before releasing the podcast for just this reason. It would have been a very different show if we would have committed to our first ideas released the show right away.)
As social animals, we tend to overemphasize the strength of someone’s beliefs more than the substance of the actual belief itself.
Ramin talks about the two extreme sides of the motivational coin… carrots and sticks… bootstrappers and manifestors. We explore how dogma gets in the way of otherwise useful tips.
Shane shares some basics of what he has learned about habit forming from scientists and why spring is such a better time for resolutions than New Year’s Eve.
Watch to learn how you two can buy a yacht with a firmly held series of misunderstandings.
Ramin and Shane have been collaborating and having hilarious philosophical conversations about art, comedy, meaning, existentialism, drive, and the nature of reality for years.
In this first official episode of MUM, they introduce themselves so you can get a sense of their interests and vibe.
Having recorded 10 episodes before launch we can say that the show continues to evolve more structure and production value. If you want a sneak peak of things to come, head to Patreon to watch Episode 7 when they finalized our new studio and format.

This episode captured the wonderfully serendipitous and organic beginning of the Mind Under Matter Podcast.
Originally, Ramin Nazer invited Shane Mauss on his podcast The Rainbow Brainskull Hour. Halfway through the recording these two old friends decided that they needed to combine forces and start doing a whole podcast of their own.
