June 19, 2020 HoCS Tip of the Day: Best Practices on YouTube
The best methods are still manual.
You don’t have to buy ads to generate traffic – use YouTube as the sales funnel or to bring more attention to you.
Make sure you’re clear on what you want people to do – even if you do not talk about it in your video – link to it!
Manual effort to upload and write descriptions for videos, find other videos and leave genuine comments, and cross promote on other platforms, but they all work and they all take time
It’s also much easier to give up than it is to get started.

June 18, 2020 HoCS Tip of the Day: Consistency is Key
YouTube is much like fitness - consistent training and nutrition pay off, while being sporadic or doing to much can leave you wondering what went wrong. Of course, this is just an analogy.

Whatever you do in the YouTube space – consistency is the best way to go – once a month, once a week, or more – consistency keeps people coming back for more.
Scheduling is easy, and I recommend batching content – for a week or a month at a time – depends on how much you want to publish
I do not recommend a lot of fancy editing unless that’s what you do with the channel. People want you to be who you are and it’s your message that’s the most important
With the exception of my fun graphics as intros/outtros I don’t have much – and all of that can and will change as time goes on. I have fun with this now because my focus is very different right now for my own channel than it would be for someone else's.

June 17, 2020 HoCS Tip of the Day: The YouTube Algorithm in 3 minutes
Today we talk about the YouTube algorithm for about 3 minutes. Why not very long? Because my biggest tip is to try to not “game” the algorithm
YouTube is part of Google, which you may know – they have a very advanced search engine that is used for YouTube
It will always find the viewer for your content. No matter what. If you have everything in place, YouTube will always bring your video to the right viewer regardless of your size or how many videos you have. If you follow the rules for posting and are clear in what you want to do – it’s going to work for you.
There’s also a ripple effect. What you put out today may not be popular that day, but a shift in content or a single video can make a large difference in watch time and views on that video over time. It is a long game, but what’s the rush of building a following or buying one if there’s nothing in it for you? It’s all just for fun anyway, right?

What’s my story – I have about 60 subscribers on my channel, so how can I know anything about YouTube?
I’ve worked on Channels before – building one to 125,000 followers while working with a fitness and lifestyle channel out of South Korea and I didn’t know then anywhere near what I do now, and I still have the #1 video idea on that channel – one 5 minute video that brought in 4 million views
And their other social media followings aren’t as large as many of yours – you have 100s of thousands or even millions of followers on other platforms and you’re getting nothing for all of that effort
What worked over the course of 2 years?
Keyword planning and TubeBuddy to figure out the best titles
Thumbnails – to bring in more click traffic
Consistent content and engagement with the audience
Looking at the metrics and figuring out what people wanted to see
Filling in the white space – what aren’t other people doing
Pointing everything to your videos, your channel, and leveraging your other followings

YouTube is great for How – To content. Really Really. If you're getting started, 0 - 100 the How-To space will grow your channel.

Cosplay is the ultimate space for how-to, and there’s a ton of space on YouTube for great cosplay tutorials. If you know any part of building inside of cosplay, you can create short videos on building anything from foam armor to sewing costumes.
You need 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time which sounds like a lot. It is a lot, but when you think about Instagram’s requirement for 10,000 subscribers just to swipe up, maybe it’s not so much.
Subs take time, but it’s all content heading in a positive direction, helping others, and bringing them to you
Watch time is all based on attention and what people are looking for – but they are looking for Cosplay – it’s a big industry – all things surrounding it can also work for a channel.
We’ll talk about Thumbnails, watch time, structure, and methods this week
We aren’t going to get into exactly how, but general tips all week if you’re thinking of getting on YouTube or more the question – what’s stopping you from getting on YouTube?

o What’s your main idea? What the one thing you want people to know about you or what you do? Use the platform closest to that and then point everything to that.
o I recommend making it about your website, again because you can control your own commerce and own the space.

Are all of your eggs in the Patreon basket?

We talked about websites, and email lists, and spaces to create funnels that point to your main idea. What we didn't talk about is diversification.

The more places you are and the more ways you can repackage your content, the better - from video to audio to photography, showing up is step one.

There are many ways to do this, and there are many ways to offer social proof for the organizations and venues that you want to be involved with. I'll name a few in the Cast, and get you started on the many different ideas there are for Cosplayers to reach out to their community [you can use proceeds for fundraising too - I'd mention everything, and there will definitely be more on this topic in the future]

What if you don’t want maintenance?

Isn't a website a lot of work? Isn't making money inside of Cosplay also a lot of work, and maybe we're not here for that - maybe we just want to have fun, or enjoy a hobby - does it have to be about money?

No. It's does not.

But either way, do you want all the maintenance just to put your message and your truth out there?
Social Media is “maintenance free"...sort of, it's a ton of work and you have to feed it regularly and keep producing content. There's not a lot of set up, but Social has become more and more expansive to the Cosplay world.
Think about Podcasts again, and about creating that one thing that everything else points to - you don't have to create unique content on every platform, but focus on one, and if you have an offer, try to focus on one at a time too.

Have you built an opt-in and do you have a way to capture emails? This may be a little advanced, but think about emailing as a form or marketing to your fans and followers.

You can still reach a lot of people through email. I know people who do this with Pateron and it WORKS every single time.

Email lists are still important to build if you’re getting into eCommerce in any shape or form
o You can use social and pay for promoted posts or swipe up features, but opt-ins are still the best gateway to Commerce
o If you have a website, opt-ins are easy to add, and it targets people who are interested – well worth the maintenance
