“Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.” Sylvia Earle is an American marine biologist, explorer, author, diver and lecturer. She is currently 82 years old. Some of her nicknames include ‘The Joan of Arc of the Oceans’, ‘The Great Sturgeon General’ and ‘Her Deepness.’ Sylvia has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998. She was the first female chief scientist of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and was Time Magazine’s first ever Hero for the Planet in 1998. Sylvia inspired the group Ocean Elders, which is dedicated to protecting the ocean and its wildlife and her company Mission Blue aims to establish protected areas in the oceans called Hope Spots. You can watch her documentary ‘Mission Blue’, celebrating Sylvia’s life and work, on Netflix.
