Time is strange isn’t it? We talk about saving time but can we really? Every single person gets the same amount of time in a day – 24 hours of 60 minutes each. Whether you are rich or poor, black or white, male or female – we all have exactly the same amount of time in a day. Some of that is non-discretionary time. Time at work, time sleeping (though we can decide how much that is). So how do manage our time better? We have heard in the interview of how difficult it can be in practice to manage our time well and get everything done that needs done and everyone to see that we need to see and time off to relax and enjoy being with friends etc. When we look back on our lives will we have regrets about how we spent our time?

Pentecost Sunday marks the day recorded in Acts 2 when the young church was meeting in Jerusalem after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus – they were commanded to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come. And he did come - and as they were gathered a sound like the blowing of a violent wind filled the whole house and some began to speak in other languages and there seemed to be tongues of fire appearing over the heads of those there. It must have been an awesome sight and an awesome sound and the early church would never forget it. It was the sound of heaven touching earth.

I want to explore this idea of rest and refreshment and, as with the other sermons in this series, see how we can take this particular aspect of home and see how we need it in our lives as individuals and also how we need it in our lives corporately as church. If church is our “home” then how can we model ideas of recreation and rejuvenation and celebration as we gather whether that be on a Sunday or in our Laser Groups or indeed any other day of the week.

“Who can stand in the presence of the Lord – this holy God?” It is a great question to ask. Sadly in our age and in our culture it is a question that is rarely asked.

For a start many question if there is even a God never mind how we should stand before Him. But let’s assume we are speaking to believers, let’s assume as we are in church this evening that the audience do believe in God. How can we behave properly before him, how can we worship him and obey him and revere him. In short as in the title of the sermon this evening – how can we take God seriously?
