In today’s episode, we explore the relationship between addiction and the highly sensitive person. Drawing on Marina’s journey and path of recovery and her training in compassionate inquiry with Dr Gabor Mate, we explore the definition of addiction outside of the mainstream medical model, and the subtle ways addiction can show up in our lives. 

We also discuss the 8-step recovery program, co-founded by Dr, Valerie Mason-John and Dr Paramabandhu Groves which uses Buddhist teachings to overcome addiction and which Marina is also trained in.  

Finally, we explore and share our relationship with the wounded healer, and how it is our own wounds, trauma and challenges that propelled us on our healing path, and which eventually led us to coach, counsel and guide others on their journey of healing, recovery and transformation.

About Marina...

Marina specializes in alternative approaches to health, spirituality, and life in general. Originally from Yugoslavia, Marina has a BA in Psychology from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and her MA in Communications is from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. She trained in conflict resolution and mediation, yoga and meditation, and Ayurveda. She is a certified Mindfulness-Based Addiction Recovery coach and currently teaches this 8-week course online. Marina is also a certified practitioner of the Compassionate Inquiry approach, developed by Dr Gabor Mate. Her work is closely connected to her personal path of recovery from addiction.

In this short episode, I share the perspective that high sensitivity cannot be explained due to innate traits or genetic alone, but we need to consider the impact that our environment has on how our sensitivity is expressed.  I also propose that our sensitivity is linked to our individual soul's purpose.

I briefly introduce some of the theories that have inspired my work, such as Bruce Lipton's work on epigenetics which takes up away from the idea that we're simply biochemical machines to understand that we are very powerful in creating and unfolding the lives that we lead. About William Allen…
William Allen is a first-time author with a writer’s heart and researcher’s mind. After getting a degree in Psychology with an eye on doing psychological research, he recalibrated for a career in Information Technology. He found himself in a thirty-year career as an Information Technology manager at Wells Fargo who enjoyed managing highly intelligent, often difficult staff, many of whom were highly sensitive.

He retired early from his corporate job to found his Hypno-coaching and neurofeedback brain training business, BrainPilots, in Bend, Oregon. While in Bend, he co-organized the area’s first Introvert/Highly Sensitive Person discussion group. 

In late 2016, he began his blog, The Sensitive Man, about his experiences, as a highly sensitive man. The blog became the genesis of his book, Confessions of a Sensitive Man. He feels that Highly Sensitive Men need to take their keen insights and intuition and make them public. He would like to shed more light on highly sensitive men and the much-needed role they need to take in our society.
