THE EXPANSE – SEASON 5 REVIEW
Season 5 of “The Expanse” continues to deliver an intense, character-driven odyssey exploring the fate of humanity, with no sign of slowing down. Everything becomes personal, as it plumbs the depths of some of our favorite character’s pasts and tosses the Rocinante Crew in wildly different directions. Naomi returns to the Belt in search of her son, Philip, hoping to save him from the same murderous extremism as his father, Marco Inaros. Amos returns to Earth to tend to unfinished business and to see an old friend. Alex returns to Mars to reconcile with his family and reconnects with Bobbie Draper. James Holden returns to Tycho Station seeking to convince Fred Johnson to destroy the protomolecule. War feels closer than ever as Avasarala, no longer Secretary General of the UN, must tap into her diplomatic genius in order to hold humanity together. Peace remains paper thin due to Marco Inaros, narcissistic commander of The Free Navy, who intends to radicalize his fellow Belters by committing a multitude of asteroidal atrocities upon the “Inners”(Earth and Mars). Rose, Robert, Aaron, and Alex pledge themselves to the OPA as they gush about the best scifi show on television.

Rose Mattox (Screener Squad, Eye On The Prize)
Originally hailing from Austin then Houston, Rose has been an avid movie and TV fanatic pretty much since birth. She spends spending her days watching Star Trek reruns, 60’s spy fiction, and Audrey Hepburn movies with her beloved minion (see: dog Riley). She also occasionally dabbles in comedy, screenwriting, as well as graphic and interior design. Rose has been contributing to One of Us since 2019 as a member of the Screener Squad, as well as making regular appearances on Eye on the Prize during awards season. She can be found on Twitter at @nightattheopera.
Robert Garza (Screener Squad)
If it weren’t for sad music and scary stories I wouldn’t be as well-adjusted and cheerful as I am today. Moonlighting as a musician off and on since adolescence, I am as big a fan of scores and needle drops as I am of slow zooms, production design, and third act exposition. Just about all of my screen time is spent on international horror, drama, and hour long episodic. Big fan of genre, and the biggest fan of supernatural horror and dark sci-fi with meaningful representation and narratives that use trauma, grief, and grace as more than surface-level content. Also, I read a ton of modern horror novels/comics and stan Matt Berry. In the before times I worked music and film festivals across the US and will hopefully return to that sometime in the future.
Aaron Woodul (Digital Noise, Screener Squad)
It all began when Aaron was a wee little lass going to his father’s work late in the evening because an all-nighter had to be pulled. Unable to help his father, he and his mother were relegated to a conference room where there was a tv on a dolly and a VCR. He watched Cannon Film’s “Masters of the Universe” and his mind was forever altered by what we will call its greatness.
