Robin Wilcox, Senior Parks and Trails Planner, with Oregon Parks and Recreation, shares what is being done to close the gaps and make the Oregon Coast Trail an end to end trail. In 2017, Oregon passed a bill that directed the State Parks and Recreation department to work with other interested agencies, local governments and interested parties to develop an action plan to complete the Oregon Coast Trail.
Robin shares an overview of the Oregon Coast Trail, the action planning process including the process of collaboration with several other partners in a shared effort to develop a completed trail. She also shares some recommended spots for hiking and enjoying the beautiful coastline.
The Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) is a long-distance hiking route along the Pacific coast of Oregon. It follows the coast of Oregon from the mouth of the Columbia River to the California border south of Brookings. The trail was envisioned in 1959 by Samuel N. Dicken, a University of Oregon geography professor, approved in 1971 by the Oregon Recreation Trails Advisory Council. The walking length of the trail varies depending on choice of passage across or around estuaries and rivers along the route. If a ferry is not arranged or available, an alternate route around the estuary must be taken; if traveling on foot, this means road walking. The length of the trail is about 425 miles (680 km) if no ferries are used, though the official coastal guide gives a length of 382 miles (615 km). If no ferries are used, about 39 percent of the route is on the beach, 41 percent is on paved road, and 20 percent is on trail and dirt roads. (source: Wikipedia)

Jen takes listeners on her journey of what was an attempted through hike of the Superior Hiking Trail which became this amazing adventure where she learned about herself, her inner strength and the power of bringing together and creating community via hiking.
In this episode Jen shares her background of coming to hike later in life and transforming into "Super Jen" as an active volunteer for her son's Boy Scouts troop. These experiences taught her confidence and many outdoors skills that she was able to apply to her hiking adventures.
Jen's commitment to volunteerism and the outdoors is also evident through her clean up work as a Groundskeepers and leading hikes in her area for Women Who Hike.

On this special Halloween edition of Hike, Lori takes you on her haunted hike to the Jump Off Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and then she brings on guest Andrea Lankford, author of Haunted Hikes: Spine Tingling Tales and Trails from North America's National Parks (Santa Monica Press, 2006).
Andrea talks about what inspired her to write this haunted hiking guide book, how her work in the national parks as a ranger provided first hand chilling accounts of paranormal activity. We touch on Native American legends, and frightening encounters in Yosemite, Grand Canyon and some of the unexplained experiences in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Shyla takes us on her backpack of the West Coast Trail, what it takes to plan a hike on the WTC, the beauty of it's rugged, coastal terrain and making the most of an experience even when things don't exactly go as intended.
The West Coast Trail is a 75km (47 mi) backpacking trail that follows the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It was built in 1907 as a lifesaving trail to rescue shipwrecked survivors. It's now part of the Pacific Rim National Park and has been called one of the world's top hiking trails (source: Wikipedia).
We also talk about Shy's experiences as a Girl Guide Leader and the trails she hits up closer to home in Toronto.

Nancy East of Hope and Feather Travels Blog shares her adventures living with the mountains in her backyard. She's a certified Naturalist through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Tremont Institute, a Search and Rescue Volunteer and shares her wilderness safety knowledge with fellow hikers through holding classes (both virtual and in the field!) and her blog posts.
After 25 years of hiking in the Smokies, Nancy recently completed her map of hiking all the official trails becoming a member of the 900 Miler Club. As a way to give back to the park that she has loved so much, she is doing the Tour De LeConte challenge and raising money for Trails Forever Program and Friends of the Smokies who are rehabilitating one of the trails up to the LeConte Summit (Trillium Gap). This challenge is close to 45 miles and over 11,000 feet of elevation gain in 24 hours where Nancy will hike all the trails that lead to the LeConte summit.
