  • The Church - Called to Mission - 2.2.2020 Sermon

    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

    Matthew 28:16-20 NASB

16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

    OUTLINE

    • Doubts 28:16-17
    • Discipleship 28:18-19
    • Decisions 28:19-20
    • Delight 28:18-20

    QUESTIONS

    1. How do you understand what it means to be a disciple? How do you make a disciple? What did Jesus say about this in Matthew 4:19? In what ways have we depended more on systems than on the Spirit’s help? How do you know if you are growing as a disciple?
    2. In what ways do we enjoy gathering over going? Why is there a tendency for the church to huddle and become comfortable and critical? How have you “huddled” more than “gone?” How has “going” been part of your growth as a follower of Jesus?
    3. In what ways have you rejected submission to joining the Great Commission to pursue your own mission? Where have you found yourself asking Him to bless your mission? What does repentance in this look like? Where do you sense that God is leading you to “go?” How can your community group join you or help you “go?”
    4. Following Jesus means saying, “anything, anywhere, anytime.” What frightens you most about that? What is most exciting about following Jesus?

    QUESTIONS

    1. What stood out to you about authority and submission from the message? How does a Biblical view of authority and submission contrast with the world’s view? What makes submission such a difficult and sensitive topic?
    2. Where in your story have you been impacted (negatively or positively) by authority and submission? How has authority been used against you? In what ways have you used authority to hurt or harm others? Where in your life is submission most difficult for you? What does that show you?
    3. What does Jesus’ life teach us about authority and submission? How does Jesus’ example cause you to reflect on how you are called to both authority and submission? What do you need to repent of, in regard to authority and submission? Who do you need to make things right with? What are the best ways you can grow in authority and submission this week?
