Tomatoes: long thought to have been poisonous, were not consumed in America until 1820. Not until Robert Johnson, of Salem, New Jersey, decided to quell everyone's fears by publicly eating tomatoes to the shock and horror of the crowds that watched on. Palisade, Nevada had the distinction of being called "The Toughest Town West of Chicago" in the late 1870s. Passengers riding the train from San Francisco to Chicago would stop at Palisades on the way. There they would be "greeted" with frequent gunfights, raids, hangings and bank robberies. Passengers would flee back to the train in terror. But unbeknownst to the passengers, everything thing they saw was a hoax!
