Tomatoes: long thought to have been poisonous, were not consumed in America until 1820. Not until Robert Johnson, of Salem, New Jersey, decided to quell everyone's fears by publicly eating tomatoes to the shock and horror of the crowds that watched on. This story may or may not be true, but the story of tomatoes throughout out history (and in Salem County, New Jersey) is certainly weird.
