Holistic Career Change

In this episode, I’m inviting you to listen to a very unique and, in many ways, unexpected career unfolding. My client Niamh is a musician and, as we jokingly called her,  a career ‘returner’. After many twists and turns, using the holistic process, she found her way back to her first love - music.

 We will discuss:

-How Niamh’s identity as a musician was initially built upon external validation and how it eventually lead to creative, emotional, and physical burn-out.

-About the disconnect between dreaming big and taking action. Niamh shares how she needed to learn to build a bridge toward her vision by taking the small daily steps. 

-We talk about her transformed relationship with energy and how she’d feel tired all the time until she learnt how to work with her mind and how she developed a life-changing skill of questioning the thoughts she used to take for granted.

-We also speak about resistance - and how she realized how sometimes she mistook basic resistance towards something new as her intuition not to pursue things.

-We discuss breaking the rules and giving ourselves permission to create new landscapes. For Niamh, it was about recreating the musical landscape - which was in her words one of the most liberating experiences.

Niamh is an Irish musician, nature lover and sewing enthusiast, in pursuit of a creative life and career.

After several years of following an exciting but struggle-filled classical music path, she took time out to gain some wisdom and perspective from the rest of the world, and to get acquainted with her self, before reentering a musical career from a place of creativity and joy.

This week I'm bringing you another transformational career change story. My client Michelle has come on a podcast to share her switch from the wine industry to marriage and family therapy.

In many ways, her story is almost a textbook case of a career change process. She went through all the stages and phases I speak about on this podcast, she overcame massive resistance and changed some old sabotaging patterns that kept her stuck, unfulfilled,  and completely terrified of choosing a new career path.

In our conversation, we also chat about just how much Michelle was paralysed to make any decision and was convinced she couldn't make a “wrong” decision at this stage of her life (sounds familiar?).

We also discuss toxic relationships with work and we go into detail about those pivotal moments of Michelle's change process that completely changed the trajectory of her future.

This week we are exploring the emerging phenomenon of portfolio careers.
Portfolio career is a fancy term for the type of careers that consist of multiple streams of income, jobs, or businesses when compared to a traditional single career path. This allows individuals to combine skills, experiences, and interests to create a diverse portfolio of pursuits that provide both financial stability and personal fulfillment.
I personally believe portfolio careers are THE careers of the future and I share a story of my client Simone who has crafted an aligned portfolio of careers for herself.

This week's episode features another mind-blowing career change story. My client Nikita has joined me to share her transition from being a dentist and owning a dental clinic to becoming an interior designer.

Her career switch story has already been inspiring many others who've been considering a change. She goes into detail about the obstacles she's faced along the way, the inner work this shift required her to do, and the advice she has to share for everyone who's considering a career pivot. This is such an inspiring story of transformation that I know is going to serve so many of you.
ABOUT NIKITA
After a 180 shift, Nikita is pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming an interior designer. Just a few short months ago, however, her life looked very different. She was a dentist and burned-out owner of a dental clinic, fully living out of alignment. Her journey back to herself wasn’t easy, but it was with aligned action, intention, acceptance, and belief that she began owning her own life and waking up to her own power. Since saying yes to herself, she’s seen major shifts in her self-esteem, purpose, relationships, and marriage. Her journey wasn’t straightforward, but it has been incredibly rewarding.

Nicole’s path to finding her purpose was not easy or straightforward. The majority of her life was spent in hustle, survival, and powering through harsh life circumstances. In this episode, we talk about the often undervalued skill of making decisions.

The reason why I talk about this in a career change setting is because your success in a new fulfilling, meaningful purpose-driven career or business will quite literally depend on your ability to make a decision regarding the new path you’re about to commit to.

These are the questions I'd like to invite you to journal on to master the decision-making skill:

1. List all the facts (neutral circumstances) & the drama (your thoughts about circumstances) around this decision. List these separately.

2. What am I afraid will happen if I say YES to this decision & commit to it? What are the consequences I'm afraid of? What will be the consequences of NOT making this decision? What will be the cost and risk of not committing to this?

3. Feel the feelings that arise when you think about saying yes and saying no to this decision. What comes up when you feel the associated feelings in each scenario?

4. Go to the worst-case scenario intentionally. What does my worst-case scenario look like? Get as specific as possible and then ask yourself how you would problem solve for each of those scenarios. Write out all the solutions & create backup plans for your backup plans.

5. What would I do if I believed I can't make a wrong decision? How is me committing to this decision the BEST decision for my future?

6. Before making a decision, ask yourself - am I regulated? Is my nervous system activated? Have I filled my inner resources (water, food, rest)? Am I calm and grounded?

7.  Tune into the wisdom of your body - what is the visceral response when you think about saying yes to this decision vs saying no to it?

8. If you feel stuck between two hard decisions - ask yourself what is the third option here. What is a win-win scenario that I may be overlooking?

9. Additional prompts:

-Would I make this decision if the results I'm after were guaranteed? Where am I not believing results are guaranteed? Who do I think is responsible for creating results?

-What is the opportunity cost of this decision?  If I’m saying no to this opportunity, what am I saying yes to and vice versa?

-What emotion am I trying to avoid by saying yes/no?

-What would my future self say about this decision in 10/20 years and why? What would he/she do?

-What decision will move me closer to who I want to be in this world?
