John was raised in Antioch, Turkey by his widowed mother, a virtuous Christian woman. John was baptized and devoted himself to manual labour, prayer and studying Scriptures. He lived an ascetic life in caves for a time but poor health forced him to return to the city. In 398, John was consecrated Archbishop of Constantinople. As Archbishop, his audience now included the imperial household but John continued the strong themes such as against abuses of wealth and power. In the midst of his sufferings, like the apostle, St. Paul, John found the greatest peace and happiness. On his way to exile, John Chrysostom died and his last words were: “Glory be to God for all things.” He is the patron saint of education, orators and epilepsy.
