Holy Terrors

Welcome to Stephen King September! We're kicking off a new month with one of the more...divisive...adaptations of Uncle Steve's work, Children of the Corn from 1984, or as Pat likes to call it Corn Kidz: The Reckoning. We get into the really deep issues like what defines a cult, when does a religion cross the line, and what exactly was the corn budget on this movie? Just a word of warning, we are both dads, so things might get corny.

We conclude Hotter Than Hell Month with a movie that will show us the life of the mind, the Coen Brother's brilliant and inscrutable Barton Fink (1991). We do our best to divine the films mysteries--is the Hotel Earl Hell? Is Hollywood purgatory? Is Charlie the Devil or is he God? Is Barton released to Paradise by the end or still just trapped in his own head? There's plenty to discuss with one of the most unique movies we've ever covered.

We're back in The Confessional to discuss some recent news about Clive Barker and more and pay tribute to some recent losses in the horror world. We also discuss some recent watches including Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and Lily C.A.T. along with some "in the woods" horror.

Hotter Than Hell Month continues with a trip into the old west town of Lago...or is it hell...for Clint Eastwood's sophomore directorial effort High Plains Drifter. We discuss what The Stranger really represents, the nature of hypocrisy, and the fear that people find inside them. So, is High Plains Drifter horror movie? And does it really touch on matters of faith, religion, and spirituality? We come to the conclusion that the answer to both is a resounding "yes!"

In this episode of The Confessional, the guys get a little feisty with the reaction to some recent comments by a horror legend. Then they discuss The End of Oak Street and Necronomicon (on VHS!) along with a lightning round of some recent watches including Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die and Redux Redux. Lots of great recommendations in this episode!

Hotter Than Hell Month continues with an actual tour through hell! We are joined by Sarah Stubbs of the Final Girls Feast Podcast as we take a look at one of the very first feature length horror films--Dante's Inferno from 1911. Though this film is turning 115 years old this year it is a visual feast filled with creatures, devils, and eye-popping set pieces.

We're back in the booth chatting about some recent horror and horror-adjacent news along with some recent watches. We have the good, the bad, the ugly, and the absolute bottom of the barrel flaming pile of garbage to discuss.

Also, we have new theme music! Courtesy of J.S. Bach and Brian Keiper.

We will be releasing these brief "what we're watching/hangout" episodes every Monday from here on out to keep you up to date on all the latest as best we can.

Welcome to Hotter Than Hell Month!

We pack up the camper and head out into the Nevada desert to dig into Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. We all know that Craven was raised fundamentalist Baptist but what kind of effect did it have on his movies? More than you might expect from this savage classic. We discuss the ever-present Craven theme of "the sins of the fathers are visited upon the children" along with ancient myth and fairy tales, the silence of God, and what happens when the civilized becomes the savage. So buckle up and watch "the wind blow your dried up seeds away."

In this episode we discuss the brilliant Taiwanese found footage film Incantation (2022), a film that manages to be frightening and tug at the heart strings. We dive into the lore created for the film along with the real aspects that inspired both the story and the deity depicted in the movie. We also discuss having respect for the beliefs of others, the 'cursed film' subgenre, the nature of intention and perspective, and the lengths a parent would go to in order to protect their child.

If you haven't seen the movie it is available on Netflix and we both highly recommend checking it out before listening.
