As many believed the gospel in Samaria a sorcerer named Simon joined them. What happens next is a very unusual and messy story.

In this story we learn that the gospel is all about King Jesus and His Kingdom. All who come to the King must come to Him on His own terms.

This passage tells about one of those people who left Jerusalem and spread the gospel. Philip went to Samaria. In Samaria he proclaimed Christ and His Kingdom.

This caused the enemies of Christ to flee, and their work was undone. This brought great joy to the people of Samaria.

We are returning to our series entitled “What Jesus Started” that we put on pause last summer. Last year we studied Acts 1-7 and this past Sunday we picked up in chapter eight.

In this passage we see the gospel of the Kingdom of Jesus spread because of a great persecution. The enemies of the church murdered Stephen, and now the are going house to house throwing Christians in prison.

How did this turn out? What was the result? Was God or His people losing control?

The Doctrine of the lesser magistrates states that when the superior or higher ranking civil authority makes an unjust/immoral law, policy, or court opinion – the lower or lesser ranking civil authority has both the God-given right and duty to refuse obedience to that superior authority; and if necessary, actively resist the superior authority.

This is the second of two sermons on the doctrine of the lesser magistrates. In this sermon we continue to examine the story of King Saul, his son Jonathan and his servant and enemy David.

The Doctrine of the lesser magistrates provides a strategy for how the common citizen can engage the local government to stand against wicked legislation and higher authorities that seek to impose their tyrannical will upon the people.

Saul was the first King of Israel, Jonathan was his son and Michal was his daughter. David was a shepherd and musician who entered King Saul’s service. The relationships between these four got very, very complicated.

In this sermon we see how civil authorities are to interpose against evil, unrighteous civil authorities. In this case, Jonathan had to stand against his father and king because King Saul was trying to kill David.

This sermon is the first of two that presents what has become known as the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates. The Doctrine of the lesser magistrates states that when the superior or higher ranking civil authority makes an unjust/immoral law, policy, or court opinion – the lower or lesser ranking civil authority has both the God-given right and duty to refuse obedience to that superior authority; and if necessary, actively resist the superior authority.

The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates offers a strategy for God’s people to stand up against tyrants and government overreach. It propels many of God’s people into political engagement and should encourage us to disciple our nation.

God created civil government as a very good thing with a very good purpose. As is true of everything in our world, sinful man took a good thing that God has made and corrupted it.

What is God’s purpose for civil government? How do God’s people live when the government drives out of its lane and overreaches into the private and personal lives of individuals and institutions? We know we must disobey when government commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, but are there other times when we should not comply? What about tyrants? How do we spot them? How do we stop them?

Interposition defined in its broadest sense means protecting someone from the attacks of another. The scripture is filled with commands to do this, two of our favorites are Prov. 24:10-12, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter” and Jesus’ command to lover our neighbor.

In this sermon we see two midwives interpose on behalf of baby boys against a powerful king. We then look at many other examples of interposition from the Bible and history.
