4:43 Trixie did WIN modestly by betting on #7 Turnerloose and #9 Awake at Midnyte to come into the money, mostly because she is coming to adore Nyquist’s kids (Nyquist is out of Uncle Mo, another great sire).

5:39 North County’s odds at 8-1 made Weej curious, but the move up in class was rough.

7:12 Race 13 was the Risen Star G2, a star-studded race with champs-in-waiting Pappacap, Smile Happy, Zandon, and Epicenter, among others. We were HIGH on Nyquist kid Slow Down Andy and his nice G2 win against Messier at Los Alamitos, but he stunk here!

8:36 Had to put a buck on Russian Tank, just in case that huge long shot came in. (Spoiler: Nope)

9:09 Trafalgar may be dead to Trixie. Smile Happy didn’t walk away with a win, but Placed and is still legit.

15:44 Moving onto FAT POINTS/FAT PURSES prep races at Oaklawn in Arkansas this weekend, February 26th. We have the Rebel Stakes (G2) at 1 and 1/16 miles on dirt for a purse of $1 million. For the fillies, the Honeybee (G3), a $300K prep for the Kentucky Oaks.

Q: What is Chalk or a Chalky Horse in racing lingo?

A: Chalk refers to a race’s favorite by odds or a horse with short/low odds, meaning wagers will earn lesser payouts upon winning.

Q: What is the Take-out in horse racing?

A: The take-out varies by track and is the percentage of all bets collected off-the-top as a fee to the track for holding and administrating the race.

Connally Turf Cup ($200k), where we got to see our first ever DEAD HEAT between Another Mystery and Fantasioso (who may meet again at the Elkhorn at Keeneland in April)! A VERY exciting and strange development!

Q: What happens when a horse race is ruled a Dead Heat?

A: Very rarely, after a “photo finish,” the race stewards still cannot determine one official winner during their inquiry. Therefore, the contenders are each recorded as official winners, and wagers pay out to multiple winners accordingly.

23:53 Among the Withers’ 11 horses, we both like Courvoisier and Cooke Creek. Trixie possibly adds Early Voting out of Gun Runner and is curious about Gilded Age.

27:30 Among the Holy Bull’s 9 horses, Weej likes Mo Donegal best, plus Tiz the Bomb, and Giant Game, especially valuing the Breeders Cup history. Trixie likes MoD and TiztB too, but is also monitoring Eloquist out of Nyquist and especially Simplification of out Not This Time, a sire whose progeny are starting to roar.

33:00 Shoould the Robert B. Lewis G3 be renamed the Robert B. Baffert stakes? How many horses will he have in there?! We love Slow Down Andy (of course!) from Nyquist and like Messier of Empire Maker. What is the deal with this race and Santa Anita’s tiny fields of late?

10:18 Final recap is The Louisiana G3, also from Fair Grounds race track. Mandaloun, the dominant Into Mischief kid, won, but may also just be the SANER choice.

ALERT: Trixie and Weej now spend five minutes bagging on the weirdness of Midnight Bourbon as a racer and potential sire. Weej asserts that there’s something wackadoo in his attic. Trixie wonders if this “bad ex-boyfriend” needs a meditation guru. Mentally deficient or in existential crisis?! We’re not afraid to ask the tough questions! 😹
