  • What Does It Mean to be A Man? (Part 5a)
Welcome to Hot Topics! In this episode, our guest, Jason Lange, comes on the show to answer the following question: What does it mean to be a man? Jason, a men's embodiment coach and group facilitator, shares insights on how traditional definitions of masculinity—such as being tough and invulnerable—are outdated and no longer serve men well.

Throughout the discussion, Jason highlights the mental health crisis facing men today, emphasizing high levels of loneliness, mental health disorders, and suicide. He argues that being a man in today's world involves embracing vulnerability and emotional presence, moving away from outdated notions of toughness.

The conversation delves into the crisis of connection, where many men struggle to form deep relationships and often see other men as competition, leading to increased isolation. Jason also discusses the changing gender roles influenced by feminism and economic shifts, where women are gaining independence and men are navigating new roles in relationships.

He advocates for men's groups as vital spaces for men to connect, share experiences, and learn to express their emotions and vulnerabilities. Jason emphasizes the importance of emotional regulation, noting that many men are taught to suppress their feelings, which can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Additionally, he addresses the significance of men's physical health, encouraging regular check-ups and open discussions about health issues—such as prostate and testicular cancer—that can impact men's well-being.

As the discussion unfolds, Jason touches on the inevitability of aging and health issues, urging men to prepare emotionally and socially for times when they may need support. Ultimately, this episode serves as a call to action, encouraging men to embrace their emotional and physical health, seek help when needed, and cultivate connections with other men for personal growth and well-being.

    Who is Jason Lange?
Jason is a men's embodiment coach, group facilitator, and evolutionary guide who helps men drop in and wake up to deeper clarity in their life's purpose and relationships. He believes every man should be in a men's group for the growth and support opportunities they provide. A certified No More Mr. Nice Guy coach, Jason has trained and studied with leaders such as John Wineland, Dr. Robert Glover, Jun Po Roshi, Tripp Lanier, and Ken Wilber. Many men are struggling right now as the old paradigms of what a "man" is supposed to be are no longer relevant or even appropriate. Men's work is where Jason and his team discover healthier ways to be in the world and shed the old "lone wolf" mentality. Jason began his men's work journey in his 20s after suffering from years of loneliness, discomfort in his body, and a deep struggle to create romantic relationships. Of all the work he's done over the last 20 years, men's groups have been the most impactful in changing the quality of his life day to day. It's now part of his mission for every man to be in a men's group, so they can feel healthier in their expression in the world, create more vital intimate partnerships, and be of service to their families and communities.

    • His belief in focusing on internal factors like integrity, joy, and mindset to influence external success, highlighting the necessity of addressing internal struggles for overall well-being.
Whether you're a veteran, a loved one, or just someone interested in understanding this critical issue, this episode promises to enlighten and inspire. Tune in for an engaging conversation that sheds light on the realities of Combat-Related PTSD and the path to healing.

    Who is Cole Grace?
From Cole: "I am a disabled combat veteran, author, and speaker. The name of the book I wrote is called 'Internal (is Greater Than) External: Calming the Chaos Within.' My mission is to normalize the conversation around mental health by being vulnerable and sharing my story. I didn’t always believe that my childhood micro-traumas were as impactful as my combat traumas and I didn’t really buy into the power of a positive mindset and self-love, but now I’m an advocate. The book explores the importance of doing inner work rather than seeking happiness in external things. The goal is progress, not perfection."

  • What is the Speciality-First Literacy Blueprint?
Welcome to Hot Topics! Our host, Gabrielle Crichlow, invites guest Russell Van Brocklen to discuss the Specialty-First Literacy Blueprint and the effective strategies parents can use to support their dyslexic children at home.

Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects approximately 15-20% of learners, making reading and writing challenging for many students. However, with the right approach and resources, children with dyslexia can develop their skills and thrive academically.

In this episode, we explore how to make reading enjoyable and accessible for your child. Follow these steps to create a personalized reading experience:
    1. Find What Your Child Likes: Talk to your child about their favorite things, such as animals, sports, or superheroes, and write down what they love.
    2. Pick a Book: Choose a print book that matches their interests and is slightly more challenging—at least one grade level above what they usually read.
    3. Get the Audiobook: Find the same book as an audiobook or record someone reading it clearly. This helps them follow along.
    4. Listen and Follow: Have your child listen to the audiobook while following the words in the book with their finger for 10 minutes.
    5. Circle Hard Words: Help your child identify difficult words and circle them in the book. If they prefer not to write in the book, they can type these words in a Word document instead.
    6. Look Up Word Meanings: Use the Merriam-Webster app together to check the meanings of those hard words. Encourage your child to verbalize the word after hearing the pronunciation in the app.
    7. Do More Vocabulary Work: Spend another 10 minutes finding and learning about any other hard words they come across.
    8. Make Sentences: Ask your child to create sentences using the new words to help reinforce their memory.
    9. Re-Read: Return to the section of the book they just read. Have them listen to the audio and read along again, focusing on the challenging words they just looked up.
    10. Keep Going: Repeat steps 4 to 9 until they finish the book, and celebrate their achievements to keep them excited about reading!
Join us as we delve into the importance of personalized learning and structured literacy methods, empowering parents to help their children overcome reading challenges associated with dyslexia and thrive in their educational journey.

    Who is Russell Van Brocklen?
From Russell: "Dyslexia touches as many as 15–20 % of all learners, yet most families still hear 'wait and see.' I flip that script. As the Dyslexia Professor, I translate structured-literacy methods proven most effective for struggling readers into bite-size actions parents can use tonight. Your audience leaves knowing exactly why multisensory routines beat generic worksheets and how to start seeing progress before the next report card."

  • Faith and Facts: The Great Debate (Part 1)
Welcome to Hot Topics! Join us on a journey as our host, Gabrielle Crichlow, and returning guest Daniel Tausan explore the intricate relationship between science and religion in this episode. We delve into the historical, philosophical, and contemporary aspects of this age-old conflict, sharing our insights and experiences. The episode focuses on the debate between faith and empirical evidence, examining how science and religion can coexist and even align despite common misconceptions. Both realms seek to explain existence and the universe's origins, often from different perspectives.

We emphasize the importance of personal interpretation of religious texts, suggesting that many descriptions may be metaphorical rather than literal. Science is portrayed as a tool for understanding the universe, while religion provides moral and ethical guidance. Our discussion also addresses historical inaccuracies and misguided beliefs within religious doctrines that science has challenged.

The universal principle of "do unto others," found across many religious teachings, resonates with scientific observations about cooperation and community dynamics. Throughout the episode, we encourage listeners to nurture curiosity, ask questions, and remain open to fresh interpretations of both scientific and religious ideas.

Ultimately, we suggest that both science and religion can enhance our understanding of humanity and the cosmos, advocating for a harmonious relationship rather than a divisive one. Be sure to tune in and share your thoughts with us!

  • What is Hospice?
Welcome to Hot Topics! In this episode, our host, Gabrielle Crichlow, sits down with hospice expert Jenny Lytle, a registered nurse, to explore the often-misunderstood world of hospice care. Hospice is a specialized form of end-of-life care designed for terminally ill patients, typically with a prognosis of six months or less, focusing on providing dignity, comfort, and support during this challenging time.

Together, Gabrielle and Jenny unravel the myths and realities surrounding hospice, discussing its true purpose in compassionate care. Jenny shares her insights on the importance of support for both patients and their families, explaining how patients can remain in hospice longer if they continue to meet eligibility criteria.

They delve into the vital role of the hospice care team, which includes nurses, physicians, and social workers, all dedicated to holistic support. A significant topic of discussion is nurse burnout, as the emotional toll and demands of caring for patients at the end of life can be overwhelming. Jenny emphasizes the need for self-care and support systems for hospice nurses to prevent burnout and maintain their ability to provide compassionate care.

Listeners will also learn about the benefits of open communication and how hospice emphasizes quality of life over curative treatment, allowing patients to prioritize their wishes. Join us for this heartfelt conversation that aims to demystify hospice and highlight its essential role in the journey of life. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for this important aspect of healthcare.

    Who is Jenny Lytle?
Jenny Lytle, BSN, RN, is a nurse, coach, speaker, and author of Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: The Compassionate Nurse’s Step-by-Step Guide to Personalized Stress Relief. With 30 years of nursing experience—19 of those in hospice and end-of-life care—Jenny understands the unique challenges caregivers face. Inspired by her own burnout and personal loss, she developed The BECOMING Method, a practical approach to managing stress and creating sustainable self-care habits. Now, she empowers nurses and other caregivers—working with both individuals and organizations—to reduce stress, prevent burnout, and prioritize their well-being—without guilt—so they can continue making a meaningful impact.

  • Talkin' with Tutors (Part 21)
Welcome to Hot Topics! In this episode, we're excited to have tutorpreneur Sharronda Smith back on the show to share her insights about the tutoring industry and what it means to be a tutor. As the founder of Enrichology Tutoring, Sharronda connects her work to her personal experiences growing up with a brother on the autism spectrum. This background has shaped her mission to support neurodivergent learners, focusing on helping them build confidence and skills in mathematics.

Sharronda believes in a well-rounded approach to education that emphasizes mental health, understanding how important it is for effective learning. While she specializes in working with neurodivergent students, she's dedicated to helping all learners, recognizing that each person has unique challenges. During our conversation, she explains her hands-on teaching methods, which make difficult subjects more relatable and engaging for her students.

Sharronda also shares details about her new project: a curriculum that creatively combines algebra with biological sciences. This initiative shows her commitment to developing teaching strategies that make math and science enjoyable and accessible for everyone. Join us for this insightful discussion as Sharronda talks about her journey and experiences in the world of tutoring!

    Who is Sharronda Smith?
From Sharronda: "Hello, I’m Sharronda Marie Smith. I was born on May 30, 1986, in San Antonio, TX, to David Lee Smith, a dedicated social worker, and Tarwyn Stephanie Smith (Thompson), a compassionate registered nurse. I have one brother, two wonderful children, and a large extended family full of cousins. Autism and ADHD had a profound impact on my upbringing. My interests include gardening, carpentry, poetry, reading, and cooking—but my greatest passion lies in math and science. I naturally connect everything I do back to those subjects. Although grade school was socially and cognitively challenging (especially English), academics came more easily, which inspired me to become a teacher. In 2023, I founded Enrichology Tutoring, a service that supports neurodivergent learners in building confidence and competence in math through personalized, hands-on learning experiences."
