She emphasizes the support of her family, especially her husband and daughters, in coping with the challenges of MS.

Talitha highlights the lifestyle changes she has made to manage her symptoms, including using a cane for stability and engaging in physical therapy to improve her strength and mobility. To address her bladder control issues, she discusses the use of disposable underwear, or "protection," which has provided her with comfort and confidence in her daily life. She also created an app called "See Meds" to help track her medications, which is crucial given the cognitive impairment associated with MS and the challenges of polypharmacy, where multiple medications are taken simultaneously.

She discusses the importance of establishing a balanced routine, pacing herself, and taking breaks to avoid fatigue. Talitha also shares her experiences with depression and encourages those recently diagnosed with MS to seek help in accepting their new reality.

I’ve been married for 20 years and have two amazing boys, ages 15 and 12. After earning my BBA in Business Management from SFA, I went back to school and became a certified Reading Specialist with a master’s in education. Her brother had Autism and ADHD, and his experiences, along with her own struggles with ADHD, have deeply influenced her views on teaching. Although he has sadly passed away, his memory continues to inspire her work.

She explains how important it is to connect lessons to what students are interested in, especially for those who learn differently. At Enrichology Tutoring, she focuses on hands-on learning and using real-life examples to connect concepts to everyday situations. One of the key methods she uses is the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) approach, which consists of three stages that help students understand math concepts effectively:

1. Concrete Stage: Students use physical objects or manipulatives to grasp basic ideas.
2. Representational Stage: They move to visual aids like drawings or diagrams, which help bridge the gap to more abstract thinking.
3. Abstract Stage: Students work with symbols and numbers, applying what they've learned in the earlier stages.

This gradual progression makes math more relatable and accessible for students.

Sharronda also shares her plans to grow her tutoring services by adding higher-level math and science classes and hiring more tutors to meet the increasing demand. Throughout this episode, she emphasizes the need for schools to adapt to better support students with unique learning styles, especially those with Autism and ADHD.

From Sharronda: "Hello, I’m Sharronda Marie Smith. I was born on May 30, 1986, in San Antonio, TX, to David Lee Smith, a dedicated social worker, and Tarwyn Stephanie Smith (Thompson), a compassionate registered nurse. I have one brother, two wonderful children, and a large extended family full of cousins. Autism and ADHD had a profound impact on my upbringing. My interests include gardening, carpentry, poetry, reading, and cooking—but my greatest passion lies in math and science. I naturally connect everything I do back to those subjects. Although grade school was socially and cognitively challenging (especially English), academics came more easily, which inspired me to become a teacher. In 2023, I founded Enrichology Tutoring, a service that supports neurodivergent learners in building confidence and competence in math through personalized, hands-on learning experiences."

In this episode, we're joined by John McDaniel, who shares his experience with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. This condition leads to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss.

John talks about his journey living with ulcerative colitis, which he was diagnosed with at age 13. He recalls how his symptoms, including bloody stools, started suddenly and how he was afraid to tell his parents. The diagnosis required an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, as the condition doesn't show on regular imaging tests like X-rays.

He also discusses the emotional challenges of living with a chronic illness, including feelings of embarrassment and being misunderstood. John explains how stress plays a role in his condition, leading to what he calls "stress poop," where anxiety can trigger flare-ups. After surgery to remove his colon, he had a temporary stoma, which helped him eliminate waste while he healed. He now has a j-pouch, allowing him to eliminate waste normally. 

To monitor his condition, John has to get a colonoscopy every year, which is more than the average man, highlighting the ongoing nature of his care. He stresses the importance of awareness since there is currently no known cure for inflammatory bowel disease. Now in remission and not taking any medications, John manages his condition with a careful diet and regular check-ups. He encourages others facing similar issues to seek support.
