Darth Bane was a pioneer Sith who started the Rule of Two.

Here is his story in legends as to how he gave himself the title of Darth (very BAD A..!)

It was Bane's Rule of Two that later went to inspire Plagueis and Palpatine, who eventually jumped from Maul to Dooku to Anakin/Vader, all the while respecting the Rule of Two which was established by Darth Bane.
