Getting rich is easy: make sure you only sell things that the super-rich buy.
This strategy has worked wonders for Bernard Arnault, whose vast luxury empire has kept him in the top 10 of the Forbes rich list for 28 consecutive years.
In 2024, he was crowned the richest man on the planet with a net worth of $233 billion.
He’s made the number 1 spot a few times before, overtaking the likes of Bezos, Musk, and Zuckerberg. Yet he’s nowhere near a household name.
Unless you’re really into luxury, of course, but even then Arnault is a man of mystery.
And that’s how the 75-year old luxury kingpin likes it.
Scheming in the shadows and playing boardroom executives against each other is precisely how the young engineering student ended up owning 75 brands…and counting.
His portfolio includes Louis Vuitton, Hennessy, Marc Jacobs, Sephora, and Dior.
Nowadays these names are huge, but there was once a time when they were suffering.
Arnault’s talent is seeking out undervalued icons and rebuilding them as money-making machines, which he pits against each other to generate profits.
Given how much he understands the power of brands, it makes sense that he’s carved out an image of himself as a savvy businessman, inspiring pioneer, and formidable opponent.
Rivals and colleagues alike nicknamed him ‘The Terminator’ for his ability to completely eradicate anyone who stands in his way.
His life is like a Hollywood movie, filled with daring business moves and commercial setbacks.
If his latest ambition succeeds, he’ll not only have a virtual monopoly of the luxury sector, he’ll remain the richest person in the world for a lot longer because his top clients are everyone else on the Forbes rich list.
So who exactly is Bernard Arnault? And how did he emerge from obscurity to become a multi-multi-billionaire?
Calculating the five longest empires in human history runs into the problem you’d get with trying to measure anything: it depends on what unit you are using. Are you using inches or centimeters? Are you focusing on height or depth? If it’s the weight you’re interested in, are we weighing something on the moon or Mars?
Part of the reason historians run into debate with this precise question is that empires don’t start and end in same way a fry cook clocks shift does when he’s clocking in and out of his weekend job at McDonald’s.
But don’t fret. Because we going to lay out some ground rules so that you can learn how history works as we uncover the five longest lasting empires in human history.

Good news!
If you were too slow to snap up Nvidia stock before the AI boom - or were too skeptical of Bitcoin to get in early back in the 2000s - don’t worry! The next tech bubble is just around the corner!
We might like to think we can spot a market bubble a mile away because we’ve had so many. The signs are always the same!

Assassins are known for shooting their shot and disappearing into the night, but when your target is a head of state then you can be sure a clean get away is going to be that much harder.
Yet when an attacker is apprehended, that tends to be the end of the story. The focus shifts to how the consequences of their actions ripple through time.
We never really wonder what happened to these figures the moment after they made history.
So what exactly happens to a killer once they take down a president? What happens to a criminal decades after serving prison time and is there any chance of rehabilitation? And if they can be saved, will society ever forgive them? Should they forgive them?
These are tough questions, but given how world altering the wrong man in the right place can be, it’s worth investigating the lives of men who took the lives of others.
Ronald Reagan was once the subject of an assassination attempt. The man that attempted to take his life is a free man today, and has a very interesting hobby that has allowed him to blend in with society.
So is time to learn How History Works as we look at what happened to those who shot their shot at US presidents, and where they might be today.

A family worth over $120 billion almost went bankrupt a few years ago, but is now poised to become your internet provider - assuming they defeat Elon Musk in the satellite broadband arms race.
With their legacy for innovation, risk-taking, and business development, there’s every reason to think you will be sending cheques to the Ambani family.
And the guy who’ll be cashing them in will be their patriarch: Mukesh Ambani.
He made global headlines when he spent $600 million on his son’s extravagant wedding.
But that was only 0.5% of his net worth!
To him, hiring Beyonce for a personal show costs the equivalent of the loose change he finds under the couch cushions.
No wonder he’s the richest person in Asia and the 11th richest person in the world.
But you don’t become that wealthy without making a few enemies…or powerful friends…
He’s been accused of getting too close to politics, and meddling with markets.
Not to mention his lavish displays of wealth stand in stark contrast to the slums surrounding his personal skyscraper.
Yet there are those who say he and the rest of the Ambani family are a force for good.
They’ve raised India out of economic obscurity and transformed it into a market-force to be reckoned with.
Without them, India wouldn’t be on the fast-track to become one of the strongest GDPs.
No doubt, a booming economy provided a strong foundation for India’s emerging space industry, tech services, and financial centres.
And to think, it all started with a small boy from a small village deciding to sell textiles from a single room.
So how did the Ambanis join the super-duper rich? And does widening the wealth gap in India justify helping to set up the nation to become a super-power?
To answer that, we need to travel 100 years ago.

Saddam Hussein was known as The Butcher of Baghdad but you could say he was more of a Shepherd who led himself to the slaughterhouse like many dictators his rule is marked with the tropes of any Tyrant oppression aggression and violence yet he stands apart from the light of Hitler or Stalin for doing what they couldn't do or wouldn't do Saddam means the one who confronts.
It's a fitting name for a man whose time at the top was marked with backstabbing walls and Invasion on my orders Coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war.
Thankfully his reign of terror finally ended when he was forced into Exile and found hiding in a tiny Dugout on a secluded Farm but was his end out of the blue or had there been signs that it was a long time coming whatever you think you know we promise there's more to Saddam's story than meets the eye so it's time to learn how history works as we uncover Saddam Hussein's rise to power and fall to Madness

Rudolph Giuliani is a man of 1000 faces. He was a stoic leader during the September 11th attacks and a fierce general in his war against organised crime. But he’s also a boomer dad who can’t wear Air Pods correctly.
The less said about him sweating hair dye, or only adding veneers to his top set of teeth, the better.
Rudy’s life and career can be best characterised as “changing”. For every streak of good
publicity that landed at his feet the pendulum soon swung the over way, and vice versa.
This begs the question of whether his shape-shifting is proof of his duplicitousness, or his
ability to survive for 50 years in the cutthroat world of politics.
So it’s time to learn How History Works as we tally up the many sides of Rudy Giuliani:
Villain. Hero. Repeat.

Housing is the worst asset of all time.
Even if property bubbles didn’t destabilize the economy every couple of decades, you could still end up with more debt than the homeless guy on the street corner.
That’s right, the guy without a home could be more financially stable than you!
How is that possible?
Housing may be an appreciating asset, but that doesn’t count for much when you’re priced out of the market.
Oligarchs buy up city tower blocks but leave them empty.
Corporations and yuppies gentrify locals farther away.
And landlords are always finding more excuses to raise the rent to cover the mortgages on the home you’re paying for.
But don’t worry, it gets worse…
We’re too late to reverse the situation.
Transitioning property from communal ownership to individual ownership means the commodification of the basic human need for shelter has become so ingrained in our society, culture, and rights that zoomers won’t be the last generation to rent their entire lives.
Perhaps in the distant future, nanobots and 3D printing will solve the housing crisis.
Unfortunately, the best we can do now is learn from our mistakes to figure out the earliest opportunity to course correct.
Or, at the very least, find a place to rest our head without draining our pension.
After all, shelter predates any economic system.
As soon as humans had evolved to walk upright, we were figuring out how to stay warm for the night.
But it was vital to keep moving.
The longer a tribe stayed in place, the more likely predators would track us down.
A sabertooth tiger only needed to catch the scent of someone relieving themselves behind a bush to realize a buffet was waiting for them.
Caves were a primary source of shelter during the Ice Age, but once that thawed, our population increased.
Sustaining numbers was easier if we stayed in one place, so we stopped being nomads and set up camp.
A hunter-gatherer society was compelled to be communal. Selfishness was dangerous.
But before any communists go wild in the comments section, let’s remember it’s much easier to make everything fairer when society is just a couple of other guys.
