‘Cancel culture’ isn’t new. Well, not entirely.

There’s no denying that the advent of smartphones and Twitter has played a huge part in online outrage. It’s also true that internet mobs behave differently from their off-world counterparts. But for the most part, ex-communicating people for violating social norms is part of human nature. The inevitability means it will be with us forever.

There is good news though. Cancel culture has happened so many times before that there are plenty of world examples to help you escape its clutches, and plenty of lessons to help understand how this hive-mind works. However, be warned. Just like evolutionary biology, cancel culture adapts. New words are coined, old arguments are given a makeover and sooner or later a new target is chosen. So, heed these lessons from humanity’s past if you don’t want to become a persona non grata. Unless you’re ready to become a martyr of course!

The headline story that you are probably familiar with is that; the business started out as a moderately successful energy company, but when compounding profits became harder and harder to come by, they resorted to progressively more desperate fraudulent activities to keep the party going as long as they could.
They had convinced the world that they were the smartest men in the room,
made impressive (but willfully reckless) projections about their future performance,
created complex deal networks that made revenue look far better than it actually was, the reality is that, today ENRON is synonymous with corporate greed and corruption, and more than two decades on, it has radically reshaped the way that business is conducted… BUT…
In the years since, there have been plenty of larger and more brazen examples of outright fraud, many of which went largely unpunished and unremembered.

Streaming subscriptions are becoming so plentiful that you might be getting a sense of déjà vu. Wasn’t this the reason we stopped buying cable in the first place? But the advent of channels called ‘something something plus’ are also harking back to the classic era of Hollywood in ways that will alter the future of entertainment production and consumption for the worse.

We’ve already seen how the likes of Marvel and Disney are designing their tent pole films with content in mind. Even Sony is incorporating memes into their big releases. [1] And it seems the world where trailers get trailers isn’t going away any time soon. But that’s just the stuff we’re allowed to see! There’s more happening behind closed doors that might make you rethink selling your DVD boxset at your next yard sale. So, should we be worried about the direction of the entertainment industry or is this paranoia just a case of Chicken Little?

On the 29th of December 1989 the Nikkei (Japan's primary stock index) closed at a record high of 38,915…
(After accounting for inflation) it would never again reach this level…
At this time, Japan was quickly becoming the preeminent economic force in the world.
Its highly innovative companies were churning out world class technology, investors were doubling (or even tripling their money) every other year, and all of this was creating some of the highest incomes anywhere on the planet.
But! Even during these good times there were problems bubbling away under the surface.
A long period of easy money and low interest rates grew a roster of underperforming and inefficient businesses,
speculation ran rampant as people were expecting the technology of the day to continue dominating into the future,
Companies and households loaded up on debt,
Market returns and loose lending standards like 50 year mortgages fueled a real estate bubble that made innovation centers like Tokyo and Kyoto some the most expensive places on the planet
all of these vulnerabilities were then tested by a radical shakeup in global trade relations, an aging population and… oh no… i've done it again… you’re all going to start to think I am mixing up these tapes just to make some kind of statement… lets just… there we go…
Japan never recovered from the crash that followed.
For the past 35 years the country has stagnated by almost every conceivable metric, its innovation is lacklustre, incomes haven’t budged, and the real estate that caused all of these problems?
Some of those homes are now worth just ONE PERCENT of what they were during (what are now known) as the bubble years.
So you might be thinking… hang on… a lot of these economic warnings sound very familiar today… I know where this is going… This is going to be another video talking about how we haven’t learned anything from history right?
Wrong…
“Japan’s lost decades” may have been the crisis we refused to learn from, BUT there are some big big differences between then and now that almost render this comparison completely irrelevant…
The only problem is, those big differences… probably aren’t in our favour…

Capitalism is as American as apple pie. A simple Internet search of ‘Americana’ will reveal that corporate brands are ubiquitous throughout the landscapes of the United States.

But the biggest companies aren’t necessarily the ones with theme parks with fluffy mascots. There are plenty of huge businesses that hide behind subsidiaries. In the case of ‘Amway’, part of their longevity has been down to having friends in very high places. VERY high places.
Even George Bush Junior gave a eulogy at the funeral of one of the founders.

Longevity is also helped by having a couple hundred or so billion in the bank too. Especially when they have to fork out tens of millions of dollars to settle out of court every time the FTC does another investigation into pyramid scheme practices.

For many, Amway is a cult-like scam whose operators should be in jail. For others, it’s an innovate business structure who has a right to keep their cards close to their chest.

Is this a case of ‘haters gonna hate’ or ‘scammers gonna scam’? Both of these opinions seem appropriate for a company whose name is short for “American Way”.

So today we’re going to learn How History Works as we unravel ‘The Corporate History of Amway’.

His fraud may be all he is remembered for today, but (whether we would like to admit it or not), he changed the landscape of modern investing in more ways than we acknowledge.
Ironically had it not been for his Ponzi Scheme, he may be remembered even LESS fondly for the other financial tools he pioneered like payment for order flow, dark pools, online trading, FINRA , and the proliferation of hedge fund “market makers”.
But perhaps more concerningly, his crimes also tell us a lot about the way our financial system operates to this day which is revealed just by asking the most logical question of… how did he think this was all going to end?
He was a veteran of the financial industry taking money off some of the richest and (supposedly) smartest investors in the world, running an operation that by its very nature was inherently unstable…
It also raises the question of, what did his victims ACTUALLY think they were investing in?
The whole system was propped up on the three pillars of obscurity, ambiguity and exclusivity which are coincidently very commonplace in a lot of the biggest firms today.
Of course nobody is saying that something like; “any of the several thousand private equity funds operating in America today ARE a ponzi scheme”… but the point is… if they WERE, it would be very hard to find out until it was too late… and these days, that might actually have real consequences…
Perhaps the biggest irony in the Madoff story though is that… despite being one of the largest frauds in financial history… it didn’t really hurt any of its ultra wealthy victims too badly, at least not badly enough to enact any meaningful change…
Good ol Bernie exposed a lot of flaws in our system… and all of them were quickly glossed over as he was shipped off to prison…
Nobody wants to learn from history when there is a profit to be made by forgetting it…

Before his unceremonious end, Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini was the totalitarian prime minister of Italy, and later the (somewhat unwilling) Duce of the Italian Social Republic…

On top of his official titles, he is also infamously remembered by history as the founder of modern fascism, or at the very least the first man to put its ideology into practice on a national scale, inspiring similar movements in Spain, Austria, Croatia, China, the Netherlands, Japan and of course… Germany.

Now as students of history you might be thinking that… wait a minute… a lot of these groups ended up fighting one another, but that was a feature of the system as well as a feature of the man himself.

By looking at his rise and fall, it remains unclear how much he truly believed in his own ideology, and how much was just political opportunism that fell into place.

From relatively humble beginnings he was able to flip flop his way into increasing positions of power and influence by leveraging one talent above all others…

He was exceptionally skilled at getting attention, and using it to sow discontent with… well… whatever happened to be convenient at the time…. And conveniently for him at the time… there was a lot to be discontent with in the nation that he would come to rule with an iron fist…

Anyone can join a cult. But not on purpose!

Psychological studies have demonstrated how easy it is for groups of people to spiral into fully fledged fanatics.

That’s why it takes a real mastermind to lead their own fellowship. And it’s why the hallmarks of generating a cult of personality can be seen in business and politics.

Take the legacy of Steve Jobs’s Apple presentations. Or the passion of Trump supporters and anti-Trump supporters. What about sports nuts who life and breath their teams colours?

Whether you’d like to admit it or not, one time or another you’ve been brainwashed by groupthink.

So maybe you want to see if you have what it takes to be promoted to a dearly loved leader, or maybe you want to know the red flags before your yoga teacher asks you to drink the Kool-Aid.

For as long as they have existed Central Banks have been the target of resentment from politicians, conspiracy theorists, OTHER banks, and regular people just trying to make their repayments.
BUT a detailed look at their turbulent role throughout history does show that sometimes, this anger is not necessarily misplaced…
In several cases a system that was supposed to make an economy more stable, actually just ended up creating a single point of failure that was simultaneously too big to fail and too big to bail…
So then, why is today any different?
These institutions have routinely been installed without much consideration to the people they will be “serving” and given a job they might not even really have the ability to do.
Maximum employment and price stability are respectable goals, but have prices really been more stable and employment more consistent since these banks became a common feature of almost every economy in the world?
It’s a simple critique that these institutions should have an answer for because on top of all of this they are once again coming under attack around the world for apparently not doing this “simple” job correctly… potentially even worse is that some governments (not looking at anybody in particular) are figuring out new ways to circumvent their influence entirely… for better or worse…
but maybe the problem lies in the fact that… this was never really supposed to be their job in the first place, the early central banks (if you could even call them that) operated very differently to the banks of today and they were established to try and solve one simple problem…

It’s easy to feel futile when a tyrannical overlord is controlling your life. Maybe you’re some lowly, mediaeval peasant toiling in fields for an aristocrat, or maybe you’re stuck in a corporate dead-end job working for manipulative executives or maybe you’re one of the truly unfortunate people stuck living under a dictator who is as horrible and evil as can be. However your tyrant manifests, please don’t despair. History has shown us how to speed up the end of their reign. Be warned, your mileage will vary because not all dictatorships are equal. Just know that if you play your cards right you can topple that regime sooner than you think.
