Breast cancer is the biggest killer for women, yet since the pandemic many cases are going either undiagnosed or with a long waiting time for treatment due to the Covid backlog. The cancer charity Macmillan state that it could take more than five years to clear this waiting list, in which many people could unnecessarily die. The government last year said people should be either diagnosed with the disease or have it ruled out within 28 days of an urgent referral by their GP. Yet another leading charity, Cancer Research, believe this isn’t good enough. What changes need to be made – and how quickly can they be implemented? Today’s Nick Robinson hears from deputy opinion editor at the Financial Times Miranda Green and Conservative MP Tracey Crouch, both of whom have direct experience of cancer during the pandemic – as well as a good sense of how the political system works.
