On top of this, Melissa is a passionate proponent and advocate for the promotion of women's sports; specifically, women's contact sports. She has participated in rugby, soccer and Australian rules football, and is an active member of the Canterbury AFL/New Zealand AFL committees, notably acting as a voice for women's inclusion.
