Summer in Red Hook, Brooklyn, an isolated blue-collar neighborhood where hipster gourmet supermarkets push against tired housing projects and the East River opens into the bay. Bored and listless, 15-year-olds June and Val are looking for fun. Forget the boys, the bottles, the coded whistles. Val wants to do something wild and a little crazy: take a raft out onto the bay. But on the water during the humid night, the girls disappear. Only Val survives, washing ashore in the weeds, bruised and unconscious.
This shocking event echoes through the lives of Red Hook's diverse residents. Fadi, the Lebanese bodega owner, hopes that his shop is a place to share neighborhood news, and he trolls for information about June's disappearance. Cree, just beginning to pull it together after his father's murder, unwittingly makes himself the chief suspect in the investigation, but an enigmatic and elusive guardian is determined to keep him safe. Val contends with the shadow of her missing friend and a truth she's buried deep inside. Her teacher Jonathan, a Juilliard dropout and barfly, wrestles with dashed dreams and a past riddled with tragic sins.
In Visitation Street, Ivy Pochoda combines intensely vivid prose with breathtaking psychological insight to explore a cast of solitary souls, pulled by family, love, betrayal, and hope, who yearn for a chance to break free.

    an interesting read
This was an interesting book with a somewhat predictable plot. The description of the neighborhood was vivid and the neighborhood itself played a role in the storyline. The characters were appealing and seemed true to the story and the location. An easy, quick read with some good insights.
Don't know how I missed this gem
What a rich story. The characters reminded me of the people I grew up with on the East Coast. Blue collar town, backdrop of race realations, Catholic school, best friends despair and ultimately, hope. I like bed this book and can't wait to read more by her.
    Beautiful
The book tells a story About people whose lives are so different from mine. They are people I would never know outside a book. I cared for all these characters. Beautifully told.
Compelling story, with multiple narrators/ points of view. Many fascinating plot lines and characters, yet the Brooklyn neighborhood is the central focus. The author brings to life its streets. apartments, businesses, and pathologies.
Compelling story, with many fascinating characters and plot lines. Yet the Brooklyn neighborhood is the main character, as we get to know the streets, residences, history, and small businesses.
Ivy has done an amazing job of making all of the characters so real
Ivy has done an amazing job of making all of the characters so real.. ( I'm sure some of them are ) I'm writing a book myself, ( it's nonfiction, and my first ), and writers like Ivy and Dennis inspire me to keep going and not give up...

    Publisher's Summary:
In the nine stories of Let's Do, various calamities strike ordinary Midwesterners, who cope with a mixture of good intentions and ineptitude. Balancing humor with painful clarity, author Rebecca Meacham pulls listeners into the lives of characters who struggle with and more often against - change.
    Critic Reviews:
"The characters in Let's Do are the kind of people we don't want to be - drunks, stalkers, lonely ex-wives and husbands, grieving Parents, all decent people who do indecent things and Rebecca Meacham writes about them brilliantly, with empathy, intelligence and a scathing sense of humor. This is a terrific debut, by a fearless, hugely talented writer." (Brock Clarke, author, What We Won't Do)
"The world of Rebecca Meacham's Let's Do is as brilliant as a diamond. Even the simplest actions - a walk across a snowy landscape, a visit from a sister--shine with unexpected light, and lives that at first appear to be simple are full of angles and refraction, showing greater complexity than we might have dreamed. Meacham's vision is complex, her characters rich and memorable, and the impact of her stories is dazzling." (Erin McGraw, author, The Baby Tree)
    Members Reviews:
    Beautiful characterizations, compelling stories
I am not normally a fan of the short story genre -- usually short stories are all about plot or Some Grand Idea, and you have to let them go just when you're starting to get interested. Rebecca Meacham's stories are full of beautiful, knowable characters who draw you in from the first sentence and allow you to sit down, stay awhile, and learn something about someone who is, at least a little bit, just like you. Each story is complete, complex and satisfying, if sometimes heartbreaking and even devastating. It's the details about the characters that make the difference...the wry humor of a pregnant art teacher trying to hide her growing tummy while fending off possessive parents, the woman who is so nervous about socializing with her neighbor who has just lost a child that she rationalizes fixing a "quick Beam and Coke" before the party starts, the awful detail of an anorexic teenager planning every minute of a day. Meachem's insight into such vastly different human beings is amazing. I can't wait for more.
    Prue us love in writing
Simple, Prue us love in writing.
    Honest, Poignant, and Downright Hilarious
Let's Do is hands-down one of the best collections of short stories I've come across. The characters were described as people "we don't want to be" and yet, each of them evoked a measure of empathy as I read. The way they spoke and the things they thought were incredibly honest--a testimony to Meacham's talent. There is a frankness to her prose that is endearing. She isn't afraid to probe the raw spots of people's characters, however uncomfortable it may be. At the same time, the collection has its share of hilarious moments: thoughts and actions and mis-guided intentions that made me laugh out loud. This was a great holiday read. Enjoy!
    Great for book clubs!
Our book club selected this book, and it contained a wealth of interesting topics to discuss. We had one of our best discussions yet! Rebecca Meacham is a fresh new writer with wonderful talent.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the twilight years of Communist East Germany, Bruno Krug, author of a single world-famous novel written twenty years earlier, falls for Theresa Aden, a music student from the West. But Theresa has also caught the eye of a cocky young scriptwriter who delights in satirizing Krugs work.
Asked to appraise a mysterious manuscript, Bruno is disturbed to find that the author is none other than his rival. Disconcertingly, the book is good - very good. But there is hope for the older man: The unwelcome masterpiece is dangerously political. Krug decides that if his affair with Theresa is to prove more than a fling, he must employ a small deception. But in the Workers and Peasants State, knowing the deceiver from the deceived, the betrayer from the betrayed, isnt just difficult: It is a matter of life and death. Now the celebrated author and secret Stasi informer is ready to confess
The Valley of Unknowing is both a moving and entertaining love story and a seductive thriller, one that pits the past against the future, commerce against creativity, and art against life.
    Critic Reviews:
RemarkableSuperbly anchored in place and time[A] brilliant, evocative and accurate novel. (The Times (London))

    Loved it
    Excelent read. Highly recommended
    A delightful read
Really enjoyed this book. It's a gentle, subtle read - unsensational but compelling. I kept turning then pages to see how it was all going to turn out. The author uses language beautifully and the story has been informed by his wife's memories of actually living in the GDR before the Berlin Wall came down. Definitely worth reading.
"Without a name, a book is incomplete and unrecognized."
Yet a manuscript comes to Bruno Kruger, a novelist whose best work is years behind him. In this novel of the claustrophobic world of East Berlin, Bruno struggles from day to day to maintain what little identity he has developed for himself. Declared a hero of the state, he is still jealous of young Schilling and his work. He believes that schilling mocks him and comes to true jealousy when he believes that Schilling has the love of his crush, Theresa. He also has a thrilling new manuscript he believes. Elongs to Schilling. What will he do to preserve his sense of worth.
This novel is aslog through the "actual world" of Socialist living. It is heavy going at times. This density, I believe is meant to reflect the smog ridden days of socialist life. The writing has some moments of dark humor as our narrator attempts to square his sometimes oafish behavior to himself. We get some foreshadowing of his solution in the forward that notes that his memory was scorned at the time of his death. This glimpse into the world of the artist in the communist state transfers us to a grey world that once lived at the other side of one of the most celebrated walls in history.
    Beautifully written, but ...
I'd like to give this book 5 stars because it is beautifully written, the threads of the plot woven tightly, and the attention to detail enhancing the setting, but the end result of reading was a hollow feeling. Why?
The story is told from Bruno's point of view. He comes across as a self-centered and weak individual. We see all the others around him through his eyes and his thoughts. He makes assumptions and jumps to conclusions that seem to be far from the truth.

    Publisher's Summary:
Journalist Daniel Mandelkern leaves Hamburg on assignment to interview Dirk Svensson, a reclusive children's book author who lives alone on the Italian side of Lake Lugano with his three-legged dog. Mandelkern has been quarreling with his wife (who is also his editor); he suspects she has other reasons for sending him away. After stumbling on a manuscript of Svensson's about a complicated ménage à trois, Mandelkern is plunged into mysteries past and present.
Rich with anthropological and literary allusion, this prize-winning debut set in Europe, Brazil, and New York, tells the parallel stories of two writers struggling with the burden of the past and the uncertainties of the future. Funeral for a Dog won the prestigious Uwe-Johnson Prize.
    Critic Reviews:
"Pletzinger's debut is a real smash hit. It's been a long time since a young German writer has thrown himself into the hurly-burly of life and literature with so much intelligence and bravado." (Wolfgang Hobel, Der Spiegel)
"The kind of writing that makes us want to read the whole book as soon as possible; a shot of adrenaline that immediately takes us to a new world." (David Varno, Words Without Borders)
    Members Reviews:
    Connections and Disconnections
Although this first novel by Thomas Pletzinger -- a sensation in Germany and racily translated here by Ross Benjamin -- is written in a highly approachable popular style, it contains a number of more esoteric references, inserted into the text with targeted precision. One of these is to the topological structure known as the Borromean Rings. Look them up. You will see a knot of three interlocked circles, inseparable but arranged in such a way that if any one ring is broken, the other two also fall apart. The entire book is about connections made, connections broken, and the tentative reach towards new connections.
It begins, fascinatingly, in fragments. Seven postcards, to be precise, mostly of the Lake Locarno area on the Swiss-Italian border, all with their images and date noted (you could look them up also). A message runs continuously between all seven. They appear to enclose a bundle of papers sent by a journalist, Daniel Mandelkern, on location by the lake, to a woman in Hamburg named Elisabeth. We soon learn that she is both Daniel's wife and his boss, and that she has sent him to Switzerland to interview a reclusive German author, Dirk Svensson, who has become rich from writing a highly successful children's book. Mandelkern's fragmentary notes might almost be scribbled on postcards themselves; they consist of a number of jottings, memories, records of trivial detail, the occasional profound thought -- all in short paragraphs with individual titles: "against the fox," "Heiligengeistfeld," "little porno face," "who is Daniel Mandelkern?" -- this last question frequently asked and only partially answered. For Mandelkern's quest, to visit the writer in his tumbledown lakeshore house where he lives with his three-legged dog Lua, turns into a search for himself as well. It is clear that he has left home at a point of crisis in his marriage, and that he has some decisions to make before and if he returns.
Alternating with these fragments are sections written by Svensson himself, from a manuscript that Mandelkern discovers, as relentlessly subjective and continuous as the others were fragmentary and objective.

    Publisher's Summary:
Meet Lieutenant Flint: hard-edged and muscle-bound, radiating machismo - a bull of a soldier. In the opposite corner stands Captain Turner: with his pencil mustache and tailored shirts, hes a Trick Soldier - smart, crisply-dressed, and always at attention. Theyre fire and ice, oil and water... Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox in Casualties of War.
Ten years ago and a thousand miles away, they attended boot camp together. They didnt get along then... and they dont get along now. Reunited in the Haitian jungles, in the midst of a fierce rebel uprising, they confront the most dangerous enemy of all - each other.
Its time for heroes to rise and cowards to fall, and in the case of Lieutenant Flint and Captain Turner, bravery runs deep. When brute strength confronts military honor, the true measure of a man is not in his fists, but in his heart.
A First Sergeant with the 20th United States Marine Corps Reserve, Hubbard knew exactly what it meant to be a Marine. As he wrote in 1935: Most of the fiction written about [Marines] is of an intensely dramatic type, all do-or-die and Semper Fidelis. But the reality, he said, was far different. Ive known the Corps from Quantico to Peiping, from the South Pacific to the West Indies, and Ive never seen any flag-waving. The most refreshing part of the U.S.M.C. is that they get their orders... and do the job and thats that. Its that kind of unique and pointed insight that he brings to stories like Trick Soldier.
Also includes the military adventures He Walked to War, in which Marine Sergeant E.Z. Go appears to take it easy, but always gets the job done... even if its hard as nails or dangerous as hell - in the end E.Z. does it; and Machine Gun 21,000, the story of a soldier who loses a gun and faces a court martial, but finds a way to save the day.

    Story Telling At Its Best.
    âStory Telling At Its Best.â
This volume actually contains three stories: TRICK SOLDIER, originally published in the January 1936 issue of TOP-NOTCH; HE WALKED TO WAR, and MACHINE GUN 21,000. These are stories featuring Marines by a Marine.
TRICK SOLDIER takes place in Haiti, ten years after Marine Boot. Captain Turner and Lieutenant Flint had trained together. Flint was a big, tough boxer who didnât like Turner because he was always tricked out in polish and creases, and knew the regulations. During Boot, Flint would beat Turner with his big fists, until the smaller man begged for mercy. Now they are together again, in the jungles of Haiti. Captain Turner is trying to train natives to fight against the rebels, but the disobedient Flint undermines his command. When the trainees desert and join the rebels, Turner and Flint must escape. With both men wounded, Turner brings Flint safely to HQ before collapsing, proving heroism need not have big fists.
HE WALKED TO WAR: Sergeant Egbert Zacharia Golingame is a Marine lineman, running wire through the jungle of Nicaragua, so military posts could talk to each other. He did a lot of walking with his squad. Since he had studied up on the position of a gunner in planes, he put in a transfer for aviation to keep from walking so much. However, the first flight he was on crashed when the engine was hit with weapons fire from the ground. Now it was up to him to carry his wounded lieutenant to safety. It seemed no matter what his job, Sgt. Easy Go was always walking.
MACHINE GUN 21,000: Marine Gunnery Sgt. Blake is an acting captain with the Guardia National de Nicaragua.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sarah Avery's reckless behavior has cost her a job, her boyfriend, and the independence she desperately craves. Reluctantly home for the holidays in the Bay of Fires, a tiny seaside town on the Tasmanian coast, she hopes for a calm, quiet visit, with time to reflect on all that's gone wrong.
Those hopes are crushed when, early one morning, she discovers the body of a young female backpacker washed up on the shore. A year earlier, another woman went missing and hasn't been seen since. Now everyone wonders: is there a killer in the brush? Or were these women victims of Tasmania itself?
The island is place of savage beauty: pristine sand beneath orange-lichen covered granite boulders; heaving shadowy kelp fields; sweeping cold currents; crackling bush beyond the seashore. It's also a landscape as flawed, vulnerable and vengeful as any human. Once its fragile peace is shattered, the locals' anxiety fuels a string of speculations about happened to the women - and who might be the next victim.
When journalist Hall Flynn arrives to investigate, haunted by recent failures and yearning for a fresh start, he's determined to do whatever it takes to break the story, and Sarah is his best source of local information. But Sarah - like everyone else in this close-knit town - has secrets she's desperate to keep hidden. And one of those secrets leads straight to a killer's door.
Haunting, evocative, as wildly atmospheric as the remote island where it takes place, Bay of Fires is a startling and wholly original debut.

    Tassie mystery
As a U.S. expat living in Australia, I enjoyed reading a novel set in Tasmania. There are some terms that are meaningful to Aussies but unknown otherwise. SES is an example. The State Emergency Service, a state-based agency using volunteers to help with storm damage, would be unknown to US readers, and received no explanation.
I really enjoyed reading the book. It was a bit slow-moving at times. The book is heavier on character development and setting description rather than being a page-turner with a fast-moving plot. I liked the main character, a strong, capable woman with flaws including drinking too much. The perspective of the reporter from the city was a good device as it allowed introduction to people who lived in the Bay of Fires for years.
Recommended for readers who do not require a fast moving plot.
IMPRESSIVE DEBUT NOVEL: TASMANIAN BEACH MYSTERY!
"Bay of Fires" is an impressive debut novel by author Poppy Gee who has a knack for both mesmerizing descriptions of nature and for complex interpersonal relations between the holiday beach inhabitants of Tasmania's Bay of Fires community. She has also created one of the most memorable characters of the year: Sarah, who is hot-tempered, impetuous, smart, sexy, and needy, all at the same time. Ostensibly, this is a murder mystery, but this is not a police procedural with a detective chasing down the culprit. What drives the novel is not murder but the interesting characters, their interaction, and the effects of death on each group of locals and visitors that captured my interest. The police are only around on the fringe, as the characters speculate on and try to resolve the mystery. The novel continues on to resolve personal relationship questions, which are at the heart of the story and which receive protracted examination.
