It reads like rambling brainwaves

This is a hard book to enjoy. Even in German the rambling thoughts of all the main characters, all with blatant flaws, is distracting. Where is the story line and what is this about? This is not an easy read, but when scrutinized, there's quite a bit of a message here. The problem is, this must be taken in small dosages.

The protagonist is Vivian Atkinson, who lives in the Patrick Henry Village of Heidelberg, Germany. She is the daughter of a German mother and an American father, both who live away from her and are not an issue in this story. She is busy writing her master's thesis there, and together with other students discuss their dissertations over alcohol and smokes across the Heidelberger scene. Not much else happens here, but what does happen is the constant and powerful observations that supposedly occur in these peoples' heads as the narrative go by.

The interesting twist is that while the third-person narrator is telling the story (from a male's perspective), observations are fleeting. In one sentence we read about a character's physical descriptions, but in the next sentence something relating to the person only in time is mentioned: a dead philospher, an old terrorist attack, or era happenings that occured elsewhere. Mark Twain, John F Kennedy (who remains a big hero for today's German baby boomers) and various more unknown philosphers are mentioned throughout this rambling narrative. There are also repetive mention of street names and housing developments that the US reader may not quite understand.

Other topics covered are important, such as sexual indentity and social impacts, feminism, sexism and old word order as it was in the mid-to-late 1990s. This part makes this novel a bit dated (seriously, what woman today under the age of 40 wears pantyhose?) but the underlying message is for Germans: it shows that the country is still held hostage not only by its own past, but by the political strings pulled by its US NATO partners.

Controlled by basic urge

If only Milan Kundera's short story collection Laughable Loves had been simply an enjoyable read... Several other adjectives come to mind: arresting, compelling, strange, detached, sometimes disappointing. None of these get to the core of the work, a core that, on finishing the book, might seem more elusive than at any time during the progress of the text.

In Laughable Loves we are presented with characters that often seem to behave like cut-outs being pushed across a stage whose set is alien to them. They often seem only partially engaged with their own lives, even lost in their surroundings, no matter how familiar they are claimed to be. They are apparently controlled by others, perhaps by forces not only beyond their control, but also beyond their influence, even beyond their experience.

On the surface, however, this is not a book about totalitarianism or overt control. There are hardly any overtly political themes or references. As a background, as might be expected, this seems to be taken as given. There are references to a faceless system here and there, but this in no Kafka-esque construction of an all-embracing and constraining reality. In Laughable Loves Milan Kundera seems to imprison people primarily within the demands of their own humanity. They seem to be enslaved by their own, inevitable, controllable but not controlled urges. This is fundamental behaviour that they think they can control, but the fact that they cannot confirms that it controls them.

And, of course, the urge of sex, the reality of sex, the realisation of sex, the promise of sex, the deferment of sex, the doing of sex, all of these vie for the forefront of consciousness, their common factor apparently both the motive and the end of all intent. We may play with gods, careers, influence or power, but our ultimate and single-minded motive is the achievement of the momentary majesty of sexual communion.

In his film, Casanova may have been likened to an erectile clockwork toy, pre-ordained by virtue of inevitable, hard-wired mechanism to perform whenever wound up. And in this book, Kundera presents people who mimic such automata, except that occasionally a spring gives, or a cog slips.

Post War Paris Intellectual Love Triangle

"By Cecile" is one of the original lesbian pulp paperbacks, by the notorious Tereska Torres, author of Women's Barracks and others.

Cecile is a beautiful orphan girl in Paris, post World War II, who gets taken under the wing of an older man who introduces her to art, culture, intellectuals... And non-monogamy!

Unfortunately for him, Cecile falls deeply in love with his lovely mistress, who has more to teach her than anybody.

This is the perfect story for those of us brought up thinking Paris was the apex of culture from watching movies like Funny Face and An American in Paris, and then moving on to Goddard and Sartre. It's so French, and so dishy.

Good Writer

The writing is quite good but the story not so much.

It's about a girl and two brothers who become a kind of family. From the time they're infants, Ida and Jackson are fascinated with each other. This continues even when James comes along. As they grow up, Ida loses her mother and gravitates to the brothers' home where she spends most nights. When she and Jackson get older, the inevitable happens and James is left to listen to them having sex. The story goes on until they grow up, but Ida's fixation on Jackson becomes boring after a while, even with the wonderful prose. And his obviously mental illness doesn't help.

Once finished, there's a feeling that I read a lot of pages to get nowhere. But the writing itself kept me turning pages. I'm sure this writer will make a name for herself.

Dizzying and heady

I was mired in this and could hardly step away from it. Alcott's prose is intoxicating, dizzying; her subjects are tough, hard to love, and even more difficult to look away from. At times it is sentimental and almost cheap, namely the narrator's descent into self loathing from her own stupid decisions. But the background and the premise are enough to make up for any flaws in this excellent debut.

Broodingly menancing tale of Irish ghetto low life

I found myself mesmerisingly drawn into this tale about tribalism and survival in a mythical Irish city ghetto. The characters are menacing and threatengly disturbing, the language is west coast irish slang that takes a while to understand but adds to the character of the tale. Kevin Barry has a mesmerising Irish lilt to his voice that adds to the tension and uniqueness of the story. Very original and well worth a listen!

A Pig, a Voyeur, a Donald Draper Mad Man Husband...

OMG!

I had no idea what I would be getting into when I started this novel. And the journey has been just wonderful. Duncan and Lily are on their way from their Manhattan life--she is doing research for her doctorate while he works for a Mad Men-type ad agency--to the much-in-need-of-care Victorian house that Victoria has inherited. They are in their early thirties and have been married for a while. Actually too long.

The novel opens with a bang! Their Saab has had a run in with a pig, but not an ordinary one. It dies, thanks to a whack on the head when Lily is quit certain it will charge her. Oh, no, this just happens to be a horned one named The Soverieng of the Deep Wood and the beloved pet of a character you just do not want living in your town. Actually you don't want many of the character you will meet living in your town, including Lloyd who is a really talented voyeur.

Duncan becomes obsessed with his new ad campaign, so much of his time is spent during the week back in Manhattan. And Lily, alone or sort of alone during the week, spends her time research an archaic arch concept in architecture. But she soon befriends Lloyd.

And I must mention Tinker.

Presents an insight into life in Saudi Arabia in a charming narrative!

A beautiful love story

This is a beautiful love story set in Saudi Arabia. It is a must read for anyone who believes in love.

"Men in white thobes... women in black abayas. The scene made you feel like you were in an old black and white movie"

Narrated by Naser, an Eritrean who has been brought to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia by his uncle. He wonders if his mother is still alive back in Africa; meanwhile he lives a lonely life in this constrained society, while working in a lowly job. And then one day an unknown woman in a burqa drops a love letter in his lap before hurrying away. ...

An unusual read, as a friendship slowly develops through surreptitiously exchanged notes, although Naser has never seen the woman and even wonders if it could be a man out to get him in trouble with the Religious Police ...

I couldn't put it down; it gives an interesting glimpse into a warped world, where the glossy shopping mall stands beside Punishment Square, where "heads and hands were cut off and lovers were flogged, beheaded or stoned to death." Where the sound of the imam's hate-filled sermons floats into the home.

Castle Freeman, how is it that I have just recently discovered you? Wow, this man can write. His story is serious, funny, full of wit, charm, suspense, surprises. Yet, this book just slowly meanders along -- and in a good way.

Lucian Wing is the sheriff in a small backwoods town in Vermont -- [although in my mind, I relocated all characters and setting to the South, due to the avenue of conversation and sayings, but that may just be me] -- and he has held this job for years. Wing has a different way of handling the law, the law-breakers, drunk drivers, petty thieves, etc. He takes things slow, thinks deeply on situations, and lets things just happen and fix themselves. He's pretty laid back and can afford to be living in such a small community where not much goes on in the area of law breaking.

Until -- until a nude foreign man is discovered beaten and tied to a tree. Enter local bad boys, their trailer park girl friends, some Russians thrown in for good measure, and Lucian and his wife, Clemmie, who seem to be having some marital problems. Why was this man beaten and left bound to a tree? Why are Russians showing up in a little hayseed town in Vermont? Who are these people? What was taken from a mansion that was broken into and why do the Russians seem so interested? Read this book and find out.

Freeman writes with charm and wit. This reader laughed out loud more than once at the banter that goes on between characters. The conversations flow so quickly, easily, and sincerely that you feel as if you are right in the room with them, listening to them converse and trying not to laugh.
