The writing is really masterful. Character development added to a story line that doesn't really have much action. We follow Stoner from his childhood through his death, first with a bit of anger at what a milquetoast he seems, then later developing respect for Stoner as he stands strong for his convictions. My only wish for Stoner as the book ended was that he deserved a happier life, although he seemed to be resigned to the life he had. The last few pages are very moving--but don't skip to the end. You need to read through the whole book (in spite of the slow beginning). I wondered about the choice of "Stoner" as his name. Remember this book was published in 1963. It doesn't mean the same thing as it does today.
Surely an American classic?
Never having read or heard of John Williams I approached this book with a pre-conceived idea that it would be no more than OK.
It is stunning; from it's first sentence it is written in the simple English and clarity that reminded me of early Richard Ford. 'Stoner' is about Everyman aka William Stoner, born and raised on a simple farm, who goes to University to study Agriculture, but ends up studying English, and becoming a Professor and a teacher at the University. He marries, teaches in a department with toxic politics, has a love affair, gets old, retires and dies. And it is enthralling (the last page had me in tears).
A warning : I nearly gave up half way through when Stoner's passivity in the face of his wife's evil made me despair. But read on, you will not regret it. This is a great American novel, in the same class as 'The Sportswriter'
English Professor's Life
An English teacher's life--his loves, disappointments, and his life in an academic life. His description of academic life in its satisfaction and at times it's pettiness is heartbreakingly accurate.
A Well Written Tragedy
This was a book highly recommended by 2 friends. It was extremely well written but very sad; the main character reminded me of Tolstoy's Ivan Ilych. Truly a tragic hero but everyone should read this as an example of what NOT to do with one's life.
The author really knows how to weave a story, that is for sure.
Better than Gatsby!
Although others who like lyricism in their prose could debate me, this is the superlative that Im confident to throw for this novel--Stoner is better than The Great Gatsby.
