Tsukiko is in her late 30s and living alone when one night she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, 'Sensei', in a bar. He is at least 30 years her senior, retired and, she presumes, a widower. After this initial encounter, the pair continue to meet occasionally to share food and drink sake, and as the seasons pass - from spring cherry blossom to autumnal mushrooms - Tsukiko and Sensei come to develop a hesitant intimacy which tilts awkwardly and poignantly into love.
Perfectly constructed, funny and moving, Strange Weather in Tokyo is a tale of modern Japan and old-fashioned romance.
Critic Reviews:
"True love is celebrated with humour, grace and pathos as the wary narrator recalls her unusual approach to dealing with an overwhelming passion." (Book of the Year, Irish Times)
Members Reviews:
a different view of love. Very self-conscious
A mysterious feeling, a different view of love. Very self-conscious, splendidly narrated, sad and joyful... It definitely made me wrap into myself and discover a different way of looking at life.
Four Stars
Interesting, but I wanted to wake the two subjects up!
A lovely story of love
I love reading Japanese authors and this story about love and emotions was beautiful. Loved the narrative, the characters and how the story was outlined and developed from the beginning to the end.
Magical meetings in Tokyo
Very lovely, wonderfully structured book. It strength is in what is understated and left unsaid. The characters are developed slowly through their words and mannerisms. I really cared about these people and delighted in their friendship and affection for each other through their chance and deliberate meetings and sharing of food and drink in a very Japanese yet universal manner.
The Briefcase under a different title.
Buyers beware: this is the same novel as "The Briefcase" under a different title--go to that book for my review. Why was this novel published under two titles? I made the mistake of buying both.
