Test of Faith
A pilgrimage to a shrine with waters that are said to heal leads to a miracle, for sure, but the unreliable narrator leaves the reader uncertain as to what kind, for the ritualistic Catholicism seems cruel and ineffective, the paganism seems cruel but effective, and the temptation of an unforgiving and unappealing naturalism tempts. An atmospheric thoughtful read, with unforgettable portraits of a small community of believers, two brothers, a mad priest, and an apparently God-forsaken place.
ice in the joints
Hurley's beautifully unnerving debut novel gets under the skin in shards of unsettling imagery and fraught, ambiguous moments. The prose is masterful, too, elegant and precise in usage and tone: Literate, suspenseful and compelling, The Loney is an important entry in the canon of horror fiction.
Interesting but not great

Haunting, Catholic
The superb writing drags you into the mind and mindset of fervent believers and their quest for confirmation, while the aincient folklore elements invade from the blind spots.
Okay, a bit tedious
I found the plot to be plodding, lots of dialog that, at least to me, was inconsequential. Some books take a hundred page to get going. I had that feeling till the end. I did enjoy the writing although some of the analogies / similes felt strained.
