Perfect for first grade presidential election unit
My first grade class loved this book. Rosemary Wells isalways a terrific story teller. She has never disappointed me yet. This book perfectly captured the popularity contest and real issues of running for president in an understandable way for children. the fact that the characters were adorable dogs was icing on the cake.
Should Be Required Reading for All Children
This is the perfect book to introduce young children to the world of politics. At an elementary school for dogs, a poodle named Tiffany and a bulldog named Charles decide to run for class president. With support and financial help from their parents, they begin a lavish campaign with songs, rallies, and outlandish promises such as soda in water fountains and eyebrow pencils in pencil kits. This soon degenerates into negativity with false accusations on flyers and buttons. A terrier named Otto is disgusted by their actions and decides that he will run with a different kind of campaign. He asks all the dogs in the school what they want from their leader, listens to their ideas, and makes campaign cookies promising realistic things that are what the dogs actually want, such as blankets for nap time. I don't think anyone needs a spoiler alert to guess who won. The book starts with a disclaimer that "Any resemblance to any person running for office in the past, present, or future is purely coincidental." But any resemblance to ALL persons running for office is what makes the story work. This should be required reading for all children. If enough of them get Otto's message, we'll have a better system and a better country.
A great children's book about elections and what really matters
It is election time at Barkadelphia School and the competition is fierce. Tiffany a brown poodle is the prettiest and most popular girl, and she wants to win the election, but Charles the bulldog, is the captain of all the sports teams and her biggest competition.
Meanwhile, Otto with the help of his friend Melanie, decides that he wants to run for class president as well. While Tiffany and Charles are busy promoting themselves, Otto talks to all of the students at Barkadelphia School and asks them what they really want. They desire blankets for nap time, watermelon in the cafeteria, and bigger towels in the gym. Not hairspray and mirrors like Tiffany wants or more meat at lunch and skateboards in the hall like Charles.
Throughout the book, Tiffany and Charles campaign throughout their school until a simple election turns into a contest of insults and smears between the two, while Otto continues talking to his classmates. When the time for voting comes, who will win?
Perfect for the young reader, Otto Runs for President explores the voting process and shows that a good president cannot be won by insults and lies, but by listening to the voters and meeting their needs.
Recommended for readers age 4-8.
