    Publisher's Summary:
He's not too sure about his wife either. When she goes missing on a routine business trip to Seattle, Jack heads up there to find her, only to discover she's not really missing after all. Over the coming days, it becomes increasingly clear that something has changed, however, and is still changing. Jack is meanwhile contacted by a childhood acquaintance, Gary Fisher. Fisher's a lawyer now, and wants help in solving an odd little mystery concerning a businessman's will. The further Jack digs, the bigger the mystery seems to be, and the stranger Fisher becomes.
Meanwhile, in Oregon, a 10-year-old girl goes missing. It gradually becomes clear that she's at least partly in control of the situation, however, and also that she's very far from defenceless.
One man ties these three stories together. We're all haunted by the shadows of our pasts - Jack Whalen more than most - but as he is eventually to discover, the truth may go back a lot further than he ever realised.

Is it fiction or not? Does Mr. Smith know something we don't?
I read this book at the urging of my husband, who read it while we were watching the series on television. He had told me it differed in a number of ways from the screenplay, and thought the book was better in many respects. I must say I agree with him. Although I did enjoy the television series, the book has many nuances that were minimized or completely overlooked in the show, which answer many questions and add greatly to the plot.
The plot of the book deals with a subject that makes sense in a lot of ways and really makes you stop and think about whether it could be true or not (at least it did for me). Without giving anything away, think about the way animals react before a storm or the uneasy feeling you get when entering a spooky house. Have you ever met a stranger that you are sure you have met before? Must be reasons for these things.
Michael Marshall Smith definitely has a way with words and situations and is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. And he has quite a unique sense of humor as well, as you will note if you visit his blog (love his photo, which gives a glimpse into his devilishness). I have gone back and read his earlier works and look forward to what is coming in the future.
One thing I find very interesting is Mr. Smith is British but the book takes place in Seattle, Washington, where he visited for a short time. I am from the Pacific Northwest and very familiar with Seattle, and his descriptions of places are spot-on. He has really done his research. Eerie in itself!
If you watched "The Intruders" on television, read the book and note how it answers questions you may have and fills in the gaps. If you didn't watch the series, read the book and thoroughly enjoy the fast-paced and captivating story.

    The Broken Shore
A compelling and interesting police procedural set in Port Munro and Cromarty--two small towns near Melbourne, Australia. The characters are three dimensional--though much of their pasts are alluded to rather than specifically detailed. This can be confusing sometimes. Also, the Australian dialect is occasionally incomprehensible despite the helpful glossary. Generally the meaning can be parsed from context, though. A very good book.
The Broken Shore, a high class thriller
I have read this book several times and still enjoy the story and the writing. In recounting the story of an injured homicide detective, who has been sidelined to a small (in every sense) country town in Victoria, and is confronted with a violent death that takes on increasing significant as the story develops, the story line is interesting and takes an unexpected twist that leads to the eventual denouement. The bare story is written in the vernacular and embellished with details of the protagonist's life and history, and topical themes including racial prejudice, small town culture and pedophilia, but the quality off the writing is such that these themes are relevant to the story and do not intrude into the underlying story. In my view this book is as good as Truth, a later novel by Peter Temple, which won the Miles Franklin Award in 2010. This book, like others by Peter Temple, is very Australian in context, but the spare writing and dominance of the story over the context, which is not self-conciously exaggerated, should make this book appeal universally to readers of crime fiction.
Corruption in Melbourne - and a dogged sleuth
I'd never read this author, but I'm so glad I did. A very Australian book, with lots of slang (and a glossary) and a real sense of place. The policeman hero is recovering from an injury sustained in the line of duty, and this made me think that there was a previous novel that explained it. But in fact, this seems to be Temple's way of giving the reader the backstory. He does this often - stops in the middle of a scene to allow the character to remember something about his/her past. It seems to work, and perhaps even helps, since without this the pace might be too fast. There are many twists and turns in the plot - corruption in high places is the Joe Cashin's target, and he handles it with insight and cynicism, while retaining his humanity.I immediately ordered the sequel.
Caveat - if you don't like liberal use of four-letter words, you will probably feel uncomfortable with this book.
    Great Australian author.
Had to do a double take of all the "Aussie-isms" but enjoyed it all, better "literature" than most thrillers.
    Ripper of a yarn
I loved the humour in this book. Dry, understated, and laugh-out-loud funny. It has that reserved country Australia larrikin tone... with all the warmth of humanity shining through. Great plot. Page-turner. Beautifully descriptive, without being laborious or pretentious. Highly recommend to readers and would-be authors. I love the overall message... try 99 times...

    Good mystery
This author is a little dark but keeps you interested if you like a good mystery
An Improvement From His first Novel
Ryder and Nautilus are faced with yet another homicide with psychological overtones that forces them to activate their PSIT unit. This time the crimes seem to revolve around Marsden Hexcamp, a man convicted and shot in the head in a court room by one of his followers thirty years ago. Yet, all the crimes seem to have scraps of his art and ties to Hexcamp, leaving Ryder and Nautilus to delve into the world of people who collect mementos of the favorite serial killers.
This novel was such a step us fromThe Hundredth Manin both pacing and plot development. I was very leery of even continuing this series but as the novel improve they are proving to be worthwhile reads. Ryder and Nautilus are great partners although Nautilus and his rhyming thing annoy the every loving crap out of me. Kerley is making great strides as an author so this series is worth the attention of fans of thriller fiction.
    Serial Killer Paraphernalia
Story about serial killers, particularly about the paraphernalia that they use when committing their atrocitiesâ.and the sick people who value and collect this paraphernalia as art. I found this story very dark and very unbelievable. I gave up at 35%.
    Excellent Thriller
This is an intense, very well written book. You think you know what is going on and find out you don't. The only problem is that just the 1st three Carson Ryder books are available on Kindle. I wanted to keep on reading.
    Another winner from Kerley
Kerley's second novel brings us more of the two Mobile cops, Ryder and Nautilaus. This time they are after another serial killer wreaking havoc in the south Alabama town. Harry and Carson are a good pair of cops, each with a different attitude toward police work.
This is a good follow up novel to the first by Mr. Kerley. The action moves along and the characters are interesting and well developed. There is good bit of wise cracking humor to relieve the tension. I like this series and hope to see more of these two characters.

Whatever Ryder's instincts about the case, however, the Byzantine manoeuvrings of departmental politics are interfering with the investigation. Are deliberate obstacles being placed in Ryder's way? "The Hundredth Man has a crackerjack plot and wonderfully original rapid-fire prose. Jack Kerley is a writer to watch." (David Baldacci)

Great narrative if you like drama in your books
As audio books go I found this one quite compelling but for me the abridged version is just too short. Kerry Shale is definitely great at doing the many voices (even if I have to admit I didn't like some of them and listening to the screeching whiney voice of one of the characters actually put me off the book.)
The narrative was lacking substance and the characters were not fleshed out enough to really make me feel for any of them at any time.
I think that a significant chunk of the book was left behind as we skipped through scenes at a merry pace. Dramatic ending and look forward to some unabridged work of Mr Kerley appearing at Audible.
Still for Jack Kerley's book (if you really can't get the printed version) this is quite an enjoyable listen made better by Kerry Shale's dramatic voices.

Fantastic read loved all twelve of Carson Ryder books.
    Good book
This is a good book and I was pleased with the results of my purchase. I like all of Kerleys stories and the books are a great read.

This is a very good read. It was a little slow to start out, but it redeemed itself pretty fast. It has some very surprising twists and I am definitely going to search for other novels by him.
Recommend this for fans of crime thrillers.
    A nice discovery
The super-wealthy Kincannon family has earned its enormous fortune, like many other rich families, thanks to practices that cannot always tolerate the light of day. But that is not the only secret they want to keep hidden. At first the murder of a young reporter seems to be unrelated to the Kincannonâs, but when detectives Carson Ryder and Harry Nautilus start to piece things together some harmful links start to pop-up. A serial-killer is on the loose with only one objective: to ruin the Kincannonâs reputation for good.
Having never read a novel by Jack Kerley before, I was truly taken by this book. Itâs very strange that I never heard of this author before. Thanks to a sales bin and some divine intervention I became the proud owner of this audiobook for less than 5 euro. The rough voice of Kerry Shale quickly engulfed me in this mysterious world of dark intrigue. The build-up is supported by strong characterization of its main players. This a quite unique accomplishment because with most returning characters (Broken Souls is the third episode) this quickly tends to become a bland rehash of some need-to-know facts. Not with Broken Souls. It digests perfectly as a stand-alone novel.
I must admit that once the setting for the final confrontation is ready, the story becomes a bit too action-adventure like for my taste. Luckily this doesnât hurt the narrative too much because it still stays true to its nature. No miracle solution or deus-ex-machina denouement, but a fair conclusion that does not hurt the personality of its characters (not like a Clive Cussler fantasy to just name an unfair comparison...).
I can only conclude that I am putting Jack Kerly high on my to-read list... a list that is getting longer and longer... I need more time! ;-)

    Good story line
Enjoyed this story as it could be partly true. We do not know what is going on. What fanatics do in the name of how they believe the world should be. Scary but the good guys are out there protecting us.
    Wild Fire
I've read a lot of Nelson DeMille and always enjoy the tongue in cheek black humour. This novel lapses into the slightly unbelievable but overall another good read with the feisty character of the NY cop as enjoyable as ever! My main criticism would be that the novel wasn't long enough - I could have listened to it for much longer. Perhaps the plot would have benfited from being filled out a lot more, but who am i to second guess a great author! A great read/ listen!

    I was yelling at narrator
I hadn't realised this was an abridged story as I would never normally listen to those. Keith Barron's narration is excellent in bringing characters to life, but he doesn't seem to realise that narrators need to keep a constant volume, more or less. Unfortunately the modulations in his voice take it from loud to a whisper in one sentence and I've been constantly fiddling with the volume on my phone trying to hear it but not get an ear blast. Several times I found myself shouting at him in frustration. Story is good crime fiction but, as abridged, it is sometimes hard to follow.

Echoes of the Bad Old Days
The plot is good and the narration comfortable to listen to. But I shall be checking the "first published" date in future - I found Glass' 1970s attitudes too distracting. Drinking large amounts of alcohol and then cassual sex with a prostitute? No problem! Some may find it refreshing not to be reminded of the dangers of drinking and driving, or of AIDS, but I found myself getting cross with the 1970s macho sleaze.
