A different style

The narrative style of this Lloyd-Judy Hill novel takes a bit of getting used to, but I found it just as can't-put-it-down as its predessors. The story is presented in play format with a prologue, five acts, and an epilogue, each divided into scenes. In the Prologue Lloyd is convinced that an apparent suicide is murder. Acts I through V cover the previous eleven weeks during which events leading to the suspected suicide, including several other murders, are investigated by Lloyd and his team. Plot twist after plot twist leads the reader to suspect first one protagonist after another until finally, in the Epilogue, the crimes are tied together and solved. Personally, I felt there were too many twists and false leads; hence 4 stars instead of my usual 5 for a Jill McGown book. It held my attention but is not one that I would read again, nor do I recommend it as a first read of this author. (Teaser: if you believe you've caught the author's faux pas in Act I, Scene X, you'll find it explained in the middle of Scene XXV.)

This is as far as I have made it through the series. I enjoyed all the books so far.......but the further I went the more convoluted became the denouements!! I know other reviewers have commented on the style of this particular story. I thought it was very well crafted. However, the explanation strains my credulity! I will most likely finish the series. Largely because of the characterisations and places. Jill McGown ........thank you!!

A Real Page-Turner!

I consider myself to be a serious devotee of the British mystery and I thought that I had read every plot scenario every devised for that genre until I read the latest devised by Jill McGown for Lloyd and Hill. Although the relationship between them is given very little attention, the dysfunctional Esterbrook family makes up for that shortcoming. Just when you think you have it figured out, she throws you another curve. I read continuously for seven hours and can honestly say that I haven't read a mystery I have enjoyed this much in a long time. Don't miss it!

This book is a mixed bag

The story in this book is very interesting, and moves very well, until the last part. The descriptions are good, the dialogue is good, and the writing just flows. That can't be an accident or a one time lucky thing.

I cannot understand why a superb writer like this gets tired of his own book before it's finished. There must have been a deadline that was too short or something of the sort. At a certain stage of the action, and I mean right in the middle of some action, there suddenly comes a spate of explanations from one "goodguy" character who's holding a gun on two "badguy" characters, with the main character in the room also. Background and past actions are quickly described by this savior as if in a hurried summary. He's just doing a monologue, it seems. I don't think that would happen in real life. It was very distracting in a book I was really enjoying.

I hope to try another Deaver book, because I believe he's a good writer. I hope.

He's a top notch writer, love all his works!

Don't bother

Even if a Deaver fan, and I've enjoyed some of his later works, this trilogy is hard to get behind. Very unfathomable heroine. How this bubble-headed young woman gets out of jam after jam just gets mind-boggling. Decided to buy all three and read back-to-back. Well, it was a commitment I couldn't wait to get through.

I am a Deaver fan, but this book did not hold my interest. The storyline dragged and there was no suspense.

A very Black River

This novel starts out much the same as previous novels by this author. much discussion about meaningless events that I would normally skim through could not be put down. Because they were interesting. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the rest of the novel, and I found myself skimming to find content. In addition, the author insists on using both first and last names throughout. It's Joe Bocco , Renee Rogers Judge Fulton Howell and Margaret Dougherty this, instead of Joe, Renee (or Rogers), Judge (or Judge Howell). or Meg(or Dougherty)that. Very disconcerting.

There is little suspense, but there are murders, bribery, mafia a corrupt attorney and corrupt politicians.

Unfortunately, for me, the good parts of this novel were far outweighed by the detrimental factors, and I believe this novel is not worth reading.

Gritty Action

G.M. Ford lives up to his reputation for gritty action with this second book in the Frank Corso series. Black River does not disappoint. I could find nothing to complain about, other than I wish it had been longer so I could have enjoyed it longer! Ford creates characters that you care about, and somehow he does it without rambling or excess words. The plot engages us immediately, a mystery within a mystery, and then quickly envelops Meg, his friend and former lover, and then Corso himself as he tries to unravel why Meg is in a hospital fighting for her life. All those involved in the plot, from good guys to bad guys, we feel we know. It's a mystery to me how Ford can do this so quickly and in just a few paragraphs. He is undoubtedly a practiced people watcher -- locking in on those actions and words that turn a cardboard figure into a real personality. So, the plot and the people are engrossing, and the action nearly non-stop. What more can you ask for? Black River lived up to my expectations, and G. M. Ford remains one of my most favorite authors.

Almost 5 stars.

I enjoyed the first Corso novel more than this one. But the character development pleases me. G M Ford (really?) writes a great story.

A Very Well Played Out Drama with a Quirky Protagonist

The protagonist here, Frank Corso, is a prolific, often off-beat writer who had been fired by the NY Times. Since, he's struck out on his own.

In this Corso intallment, which follows "Fury", he's out to get the bad guy, Nick Balagula. Balagula built a hospital with inferior material. It collapsed during a very minor earthquake and killed many in the process. Balagula has been slippery as an eel in the past. This time Corso wants to see him nailed and justice served.

In the past Balagula has slipped through the system through crooked officials & jurors who have been bought off. His actions are no different here.

Abridged too far

It is a pity that this book has been abridged. The story is disjointed and doesn't flow properly, and a lot of important information has been hacked out. What remains is the bleeding corpse of a novel.

I sincerely hope that the publishers produce an unabridged version of this book. The author deserves better than what he got with this hack job.

Having said that, the pace and general plot seem to have survived somehow.

Gripping but flawed

I have an air of dissatisfaction with this book. On one hand, the basic story of a race aginst time was very exciting, and did keep me interested until the conclusion. On the other hand, there was a lack of depth to the main characters, which meant I didn't feel like I knew them very well. Crucially, this meant I didn't really engage with the characters like I have with other books I have listened to, so it lacked the punch it needed to make it really memorable.

The narration was good, but not great. It was very easy to listen to, but some of the accents were a little overdone for my taste. I always prefer understatement to over-exaggeration.

I would gladly listen to other Jeffery Deaver books, as I did enjoy the basic plot and the momentum was maintained throughout. Hopefully book 2 featuring Lincoln Rhyme will have a little more substance.

An excellent but extremely dark serial killer mystery

Shadow Man describes FBI agent Smoky Barrett, her recovery from the brutal aftermath of bringing down one serial killer, and her rejoining active duty to work with her team to catch another such killer. The story is graphic but not gratuitous in its use of violence; do not read it if you aren't prepared for this darkness and pain. The major characters are quite three-dimensional and nuanced; the writing is very high quality and rewarding. The plotting is complex without being ridiculous. The identity of the villain wasn't a surprise, he was on my list, but that helped everything seem believable. Recommended with the above reservations- if you can handle it, you will be glad that you read this first novel.

Smoky Barrett, Hunter of the Ultimate Predators

Hello Lovelies!

While I normally prefer fantasy novels, sometimes you just canât beat a fictional crime thriller. I love crime shows and movies (*cough, cough* Criminal Minds and Silence of the Lambs) because I am fascinated by the motivations, inner workings, and minds of the criminals, especially those of murderers. I like to know what makes them tick. Special Agent Smoky Barrett, the best of the best, makes the choice whether or not to hunt a serial killer, Jack Jr., who is targeting not only herself, but also the rest of her team. The characters are very three-dimensional and quite easy to become attached to as the reader experiences their suffering, and the writing is mature and entertaining. My inner crime-fighter embraces the darkness, gore, and rawness of Shadow Man in a sort of horrified fascination. This book exposes the buried monstrosities not only in the world as a whole, but those within each of us. Aside from the graphic descriptions of the murders and various other crimes, Shadow Man also includes sexual content and foul language, but it does not detract from the story. *semi-spoiler* Shadow Man has an absolutely fantastic twist!

While I enjoy this series, if you have a weak stomach, do NOT read this book or any other of the ones in this series as I find Shadow Man to be the least disturbing of them all.

The best character-driven thriller I have ever read!

Five stars vastly underrates this book. I give the brilliant Shadow Man 10 stars. Easily. Cory McFadyenâs Shadow Man is the best thriller I have read. In my life. Ever.

By the time I reached the 5% mark, I knew this book was going to be special. I paused long enough to race over to Amazon to order the other 3 books in the series. I was instantly transfixed in chapter one, and the book did not lessen its grip on me from that point on. The last 25% of the book was simply unputdownable. Truly.

Shadow Man is a masterpiece thriller, in my humble opinion. It ticks off all the boxes important to me. The character development is simply stunning and unlike that I have ever seen in any other thriller.

Not as good as I'd hoped

This book had some interesting set-ups for conflict and suspense, but I feel that the author didn't always handle them to full effect. Some of the material - especially the sexual text - was almost silly at times.

Don't waste your time

I listened to this as it was the book we were reviewing for our book club. The characters all seemed very shallow and unbelievable and I could not empathise with them. It was obvious very early in the book who dun it and I only continued to read because of the book club. It had all the makings of an excellent story but none of the story lines actually lead anywhere interesting. Boring in the extreme.

Lawrence Block-Lite

"Speak of the Devil", Richard Hawke's first novel, has all the mechanics down pat - interesting characters, snappy dialogue, a decent - if convoluted - plot. If you're a fan of Lawrence Block, you'll see shades of Matt Scudder here, but it would be doing Block a disservice to compare the visceral grit and passion of his mean streets of New York to Hawke's more pedestrian rendering of the Big Apple. And while it is definitely worth reading, it just misses that usually intangible hook that separates the average crime thriller from the truly memorable novels that linger in your memory long after you've put them back on the shelves.

This is the story of Fritz Malone, a private investigator with a Hell's Kitchen pedigree - the likeable bastard son of a former NYPD commissioner. Malone gets drawn into a spree of murders that point to a serial killer and extend to the most powerful of New York's power brokers, while the police are trying to suppress the facts and keep the public calm but ignorant. Always enjoy her books!!!

A Well Written Crime Story That Kept Me Hooked...

I thought that this installment of the "Melanie Vargas" series was leaps and bounds better than the intro-book "Most Wanted" which showed potential, but never quite got there.

I thought that the way that Ms. Martinez advanced the story of Vargas and all of the central characters was very intelligent and done in a way which brought a very different side out of the main character. Additionally, the twists and turns were all very plausible for me and not contrived. I was definitely impressed with the story line and of the three "Vargas" books that I've read this one definitely provided the most visual-style for me where I could practically picture the "underground subway clubs" and the halls of the boarding school.

Excellent second effort!! I just wish that the 3rd book "Cover Up" kept up with the new bar that was set in "The Finishing School."

A good murder mystery.

I enjoyed the characters very much. The storyline was interesting, and true to life, as the main character struggled between balancing her personal and professional life. Lots of action and romance made for a very entertaining read. I'd like to read other books from this author.

The Finishing School

Michele Martinez has become one of my new favorite authors. Absolutely loved this book, appreciated the flow and that I couldn't figure out "who done it" until the very end. I am an aficionado of crime and mystery storylines and this book fulfills that genre. Really love the main characters who carry over in this series.

What a page-turner!

I honestly like MOST WANTED better, but THE FINISHING SCHOOL was a great read too. I am so exciting to have discovered a new female writer of suspense novels! The best thing about THE FINISHING SCHOOL -- as in MOST WANTED, I could not guess the ending! Bring me more, Ms. Martinez -- BRING ME MORE MELANIE VARGAS!

Fast pace

If you fancy a fast paced story that's a bit macho Chris Ryan won't disappoint. I have a few on my library and always enjoy - if in the right mood.

I found this book very well written, honest and believable, a cracking good story from start to its jaw dropping conclusion.
