The Upside Comes from Reading the Book
Finn is an old school kind of crook. No, he doesnât wear a fedora, carry a tommy-gun, and rob banks. He steals stuff â really big stuff, like a trainload of precious minerals. One day, working for an intermediary named Wes, Finn and his crew get caught and sent to jail for 7 years. Now, back on the street and planning to stay straight, Wes surprises him with an offer he canât really refuse.
On the plus side, this is a slam-bang action yarn, with some clever twists thrown in. And the idea is pretty original as well. There are several major players, and you can never be too sure whether each one is really on the team, or just maybe working their own agenda.
But the character development is a bit thin. Other than Finn, we get to know the other characters about as well as somebody youâd meet at a cocktail party. Even Finnâs background is sketchy. The ending wraps things up nicely â while leaving room for a return of Finn in the future â but it seems pretty abrupt.
Enjoying the book requires a rather large suspension of disbelief. The plot depends on an amazingly huge coincidence. As in, where two unconnected, somewhat possible, yet highly unlikely, events happen in the *exact* same time and *exact* same place. Get past that, though, and youâre home free.
If youâre a fan of the old Mission Impossible TV series, this will have a familiar feel for you. The team leader gets an assignment, puts together a team, and performs seemingly miraculous tasks to get the job done. Overall, there are a couple of warts, but the book is an awful lot of fun and very hard to put down. I havenât read any of Cooperâs other books yet, but I certainly will before long.
A STRONG CAPER NOVEL
Finnâs specialty is stealing really big things âa whole factory line, fully loaded autoracks, heavy machinery. That makes him a bit of a dinosaur in our age. He doesnât steal with a few key strokes on a computer. He actually puts his hands on the stuff he steals. He physically hauls it away. Someone fingered his team on a high profile train robbery seven years. He doesnât know who but it had to be someone on his team or maybe the contractor. Finnâs just out of prison and heâs got two objectives in mind: stay out of prison but find out who did him in and do something about it. While he was gone, though, his bank has gone under. The state has his money now and since he stashed it in a safe deposit box under a made up name, he canât ask for it back. He needs money now and just when he needs it, who is there to offer him a lucrative job? The contractor who may have betrayed him to the police seven years before. Heâll need a team to do the job and because of the technical requirements, itâll have to be pretty much the same guys he used seven years before.
